Reporting from the Taiwan Jewellery & Gem Fair (hosted by UBM)! Thanks to Icy_Jade, I learned that UBM started hosting the Fair in Taipei (this is only the 3rd year!). Coincidentally (I swear!) I'm in Taipei this week to visit family, so I arm-twisted my mom to check it out with me today. Unfortunately I didn't take many pics since my mom has bad knees so I had to be her crutch through the show.

I know the HK Fair is only accessible to industry folks, not sure what's the set-up in Singapore. The Taiwan Fair is free for industry people, and $12 for the public. The Fair is muuuuuuch smaller thank HK & Singapore and the set-up looks very similar. There are probably ~250 vendors, inclusive of gemstones, diamonds, pearls, semi-precious, jade, corals, etc.

I was very disappointed by the pearl vendors. I did not see any of the chinese pearls vendors I've seen in blogs, Hinata and Golay (Icy's favs) were not there either. The only one P-Gers have visited is Eiko, and even then their selection was TINY. They probably had 5-7 strands of GSSP, 7-10 strands of WSSP, and a handful of Tahitians, and that's representative of the other pearls stands, too. And interestingly almost all selections were the "traditional" uniform color, no crazy overtones, no variation in color type of strands. I was dying to get my hands on one of the Wave strands, or Ombre, or Harvest strand. But nada. *cry*

The ONLY highlight is on the diamond front. One of the oldest premier jeweler in Taipei is Ferri. They launched a new initiative "Diamond Bank" which is a collaboration between direct diamond suppliers and cutters. So they have effectively cut out all the middle men inbetween and they "claimed" that their prices are 15% lower than anywhere else, guaranteed. (Honestly I have no clue, can not attest to it). I saw a ton of jaw dropping D-IF Triple Excellent diamonds, including one 55.88 DIF cushion cut diamond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I also got to try on a few 10+ carats rings. Oh well one can dream. Not sure if Diamond Bank will attend the HK or Singapore Fair, but keep an eye out if you're interested!

Well how fun is that!!! Visiting your mom and getting to go to a Jewellery fair !! Sounds like a great time ! I hope your mom enjoyed it . Sorry you didn't find anything to buy ..I don't know anything about the Taiwan fair at all .. but it sounds like you had a great time in the diamond area lol And 55.58 cts ... I'm still trying to get my mind around that one !! Glad you had a chance to have a look at a show .. its' good fun!

That's too bad they didn't have interesting Pearl options but sounds like you had fun with the diamonds! My goodness, 55 ct.... Thanks for reporting.

Ah, it's too bad the pearl selection is so lousy... But the diamonds sounds tdf. Did you get anything?

I'm surprised Eiko brought so few pearls along. Typically they will display a few pieces but will have trays to rummage through at the Singapore fair. I've seen pics of their goods in Japan fairs and it's mind boggling...

Hey Ladies! Yah that 55.88 carat diamond is just crazy, especially in the Asia market since 58 phonetically sounds like "I Prosper"!!! Here's the link to Diamond Bank for your reference: http://www.diamondbank.asia/

Icy - yah I was surprised, too - I even asked if they have more strands I can take a look at, and they had a couple additional strands but pretty much all look like the strands they had in display. They had 2 gents at the counter and both were Japanese, one of them speak some limited mandarin, not sure if they spoke any english...

I didn't buy anything at the Diamond Bank as they had mostly loose diamonds (at least at the Fair) and I'm not looking for more solitaires/loose diamonds. And they didn't have any of the huggies or stud jacket type of items there. I do have to say though, the majority of their stones had incredible color clarity and cut. I saw a bunch of D-IF Triple Excellents, and loads of DEFG colors with IF VVS and VS clarities. They also had some colored diamonds. *drooollll*

Icy - if you ever see Diamond Bank at the Singapore Fair, you'll have to check it out!

I'd have been in and out in seconds by the sound of it. Diamonds leave me cold. I sometimes peek into the diamond room at the HK shows and think...'yup, sparkly' and go out again. (Although I am using some diamond chips at the moment . They have 0.3 drill holes. Loupe time)

I'm such a magpie... All sorts of gems excites me. Will look out for Diamond Bank at the next fair. ;)

I love all the shows, no matter how small or large. It would have been great if you found some terrific huggies. Next time! :)

True. I used to love amethyst and the temptation to start selling them (=excuse to buy them) was huge, but pearls offer more than enough variety to keep me out of mischief.

A good amethyst is a treasure. I have one really good stone, cut by Clay Zava and set in a ring. Unfortunately, I can't fit the ring right now, but Wendy, you are giving me a good reason to lose some weight! :)

Thank you for sharing your adventures at the jewelry fair. It is great to see what is happening around the world with jewelry and pearls.

Any gem fair sounds exciting, except my local fair it was dismal. Were photos allowed at the fair?

Photos are not allowed at any of the shows without special permission or a press pass. But -- if you are discreet and have the permission of the seller, you can usually get away with using the camera on your phone. Some sellers are a bit paranoid and have shooed me off even after I show my press pass. :)

Yes, have to be discrete about taking photos - although there's usually no problem when you're inside a stand..and last Hong Kong I 'carried' 'someone around the show for a while via Skype to give her a feel and be able to say hello to a couple of folk

It was my mom's first jewellery & gem show, ever, and she was in absolute shock how much cheaper the pearls were.

I have read the very illuminating post by Jeremy regarding their bulk buying auction lots and the quantities of strands they sell and how jewelry stores "select purchase"on the forum, so I understood the pricing a bit better.

I had to gently inform my mom that pearl prices did not plummet like oil & gas did this year, she just overpaid in the past... #wah :(

Pearlescence friend probably wants to attend a gem show in person after the Skype session.
I must attend a big gem show, but will probably act like a deer in headlights and not sure what to look for.

And following P-G tradition, a jewellery & gem fair isn't quite complete without a Ding Tai Fung meal (on my annual must-eat-list when I go home). Mine doesn't look like quite the spread the mini-ruckus HK group had since it was just me and mom, but it was yummy none the less. Soup dumplings rocks!
