Soon an auction sale of Pipi pearls in Paris

Hello, I think that if we are not FB "friends" we cannot read it , better give more informations HERE

Oups sorry I thought this was a public FB page and everybody could see it.
Well there is a photo showing a full plank of poe pipi pearls with various shapes, colors and sizes, and the owner explains there will be an auction sale of these pearls and more in the H?tel Drouot (our big parisian auction salesroom) within 3 weeks.
I found the picture interesting but of course I don't suppose I am allowed to reproduce it !

Isi, you should be able to copy the photos and add them here. It is an auction after all and no one will mind. Love to see them.

OK I'll do that tonight then. I am at my office right now and have no access to FB here.
I don't think the date of the auction has passed, the opening of this FB post seems to be fairly recent.
The owner indicated he would keep us updated as soon as he would know the exact sales date.

OK so here are the 2 pictures (I hope it works).
The owner says he has 300 pearls for sale and one is 9.6 mm.

WoW, Amazing Collection !

Wonder what the price would be for all of them ? Hundreds and hundreds of thousand of euro ?? hehe ;)

But really, are these pearls really rare or comparatively common ?
When you see so many at once, you wonder !

Hi Isi,

Consider the owner has put together 300 pearls, which may be one of the largest groupings in the world assembled in recent times.

However there must be millions of natural pearls in the world, billions of cultured Akoya pearls, and trillions of cultured FWP's (OK I'm making those numbers up, but you get the idea).

300 of these pipi pearls is just 2 or 3 necklaces at best. So I think they are pretty rare.

I'll be fascinated to hear any further auction details and especially any auction price results.

(I do have a vested interest in wanting to know the results as I own a pretty large pipi pearl ring).

Another question coming to my mind :
I thought it was forbidden nowadays to fish most of pearling oysters in all parts of the world.
This doesn't apply to Pinctada Maculata which gives the pipi pearl ?
Because the owner says this a new crop, so these are not antique pearls.
Anybody knows about what regulations apply to what oysters ?

In some out of the way places, the sand is awash in these little golden pearls. But don't try picking them up if you are just visiting - the locals "harvest" them. No one nucleates these oysters commercially, as far as I know. The shells are tiny. :)

More pictures coming !

I suppose the pearls are being prepared for the sale, nicely presented in individual boxes !

Bo Torrey (how is Bo these days?) once told me in his inimitable way that pipi meat is delicious but annoyingly crunchy?his predominant memory from a pearl-spitting oyster feed on a beach in Manihiki in the 90s. Actually pipi are considered a plague by the cultured pearl industry, much as barnacles to tall ships.
