Do anyone know something about SANYO PEARLS? I have a red velvet box with the name SANYO Pearls in the lid.
I,m curious of their history and if they are South Sea Pearls.

Hi Finnhelmi,

Do you have just the box, or also the pearls?

If you have the pearls also, could you please post photos taken without flash on a white background? Please include close-ups of any flaws, and also of the clasp. It would also help if you could place a millimeter ruler next to them so we could see the size.

I have the pearls also. This is a picture of the pearls and the box. I can post a better with a white background and a ruler tomorrow. They have been my grandmothers pearls.

How nice that you have this treasure from your grandmother!

They look like cultured akoya pearls. Akoyas are saltwater pearls (as are South Sea pearls) but are cultivated in a different oyster, and are smaller than SSP.

The knots look clean and tight as far as I can tell. It seems to me you could just wear them without restringing at this point. (Silk absorbs skin oils and grime, weakening and stretching out over time, which is why pearl necklaces need to be restrung periodically.)

I wear the pearls at special occasions, and yes, they are lovely and dear to me.Thank you for helping me with the origin. I have not found anything about just the SANYO brand, except there was a pearl ship called the SANYO Maru that sank in the thirties in the Arafura sea. Maybe they also made bracelets in some part of the company, and therefore the name in the lid?

A Google search turns up nothing on Sanyo pearls. They look like very nice akoya pearls from the surface orient, not South Sea pearls. They look too small for South Seas and have the wrong color. Can you measure the millimeter width of the pearls?

The clasp looks like it is silver. What is the round area in the center of the clasp? From the angle of your photo it looks like there may have been a pearl there that is now missing. Or is it just part of the design of the clasp?

Can you give us closeups of the clasp, front and back and any markings that might be on the clasp or the hook?

Yes, Mikeyy an article about the Sanyo Maru pearling ship back in 2012:
