hi,this is my first post:D
i have a question about floating single pearls on any type of metal chain.i see the design often but mostly it does not have any protection for the pearl...it can swing...and in the same time damaging itself.i think i saw just in 2 places that the pearl has a metal protection in the drill.
so...if i want to have your pearl for many years it is better to buy the one protected?

Hi ms.angeni,

Thanks for asking, I wondered about this as well. I have noted that Pearl Paradise does not use the cuffs around the drill holes and they are a high-end company so maybe it depends on the type of chain.

I have a friend with a beautiful Tahitian pearl sliding on a gold chain and it has cuffs. I liked the look of cuffs but want a reputable source for the pearl and don't know of a lot of websites. I can't wait to see the responses!

Hello and Welcome to both of you!

It is a good question! Just my opinion--

1. The type of chains used are very smooth (usually an omega, snake, cable) and pearls are light, so there is little friction or movement.

2. Usually this style is worn fairly close to the neckline, so it does not really swing around.

3. If the pearl has grommets or cuffs, by design, there might be a bit more sliding on the chain.

4. When the necklace (without grommets) is worn, the slight curve of the chain and the pearl touching the neckline tends to hold the pearl in place.

I have been experimenting with a couple versions of this necklace with inexpensive freshwater pearls on nylon covered sterling wire and sterling silver cable, without the cuffs or grommets. Sometimes I find myself playing with the pearl and sliding it back and forth or rolling it around. If the chain were rough, playing with the bare pearl like this over a long period of time could potentially cause wearing.

Either way, one can have a gorgeous and affordable Tahitian or South Sea pearl necklace to enjoy for many years!

I supply them without..but could supply with gold or silver if asked. The problem then could be that the pearls will have to be drilled to an even bigger diameter hole since the grommets will reduce the size. Drilling big holes in pearls takes ages and they don't really like it.
You could call it smoothing if it made you feel better. Pearls are pretty hard and it would last for years before showing serious wear I think

I found out that the sliding Tahitian pearl with cuffs is available through The Pearl Outlet.

TPO does not have the smooth smooth chain that Pearl Paradise offers with the Solara. However, Pearl Paradise lets you pick your overtone.

I keep wondering what would be a good size for a solitaire floating pearl.

If only one could have both of the necklaces above ...

P.S. I have been staring at the Pearl Paradise website for a couple of years now trying to get up the courage to order something. The Solara is on my mental wish list along with a strand of white freshwater, a strand of white akoya, and a tahitian tin cup. So many things to choose from a decision might now be impossible!

thank you for your answers. 007 i hope you found your necklace,
i have found mine.....i was looking for 1 pearl but purchased a necklace with 43!

i did not expect that a strand with circled pearls can have an affordable price, even with 70 euro custom tax it was 100 euro less then comparable necklaces here,in germany.also most sellers here don`t offer photos of the actual item...so it is a bit of a gamble.anyway i love my necklace, was great that i saw the exact photo.

question?can i say where i have purchased it...?is that allowed?

next dilemma....do i risk buying a pearl ring, risk to scratch it.... or worse...?reading some threads about it......still no clue
