This is such a rare and unusual necklace of Penn pearls, I thought we would benefit from having this great photo. Carolyn Ehret is passionate about pearls and a member here, but doesn't post. I know they are rare etc but they are ugly!

Maybe they're better in person? More blue or something?

I wonder if dipping the penn pearls in a polymer coating would prevent cracking?

Jeremy Norris had an unfinished strand of those several years ago at the Gem show. They were brown, almost a purple brown grayish. They are definitely a collector item.

Glad to see Carolyn mentioned again. It has been a long time, but many of us found her before we found Jeremy and she always has the unusual take on pearls....

I'm puzzled-- she says they are non-nacreous but they look nacreous to me, from the photos.

Pinna nobilis are Order: Pterioida hence nacreous. They have a huge time gap morphing from prismatic to nacreous structure though, upwards of five years.

All the ones I've seen have been nacreous to some degree. Usually dark purplish brown with a very soft nacre. Beautiful, but usually some cracks because they are almost all protein. Definitely a collector's item! Thanks for posting the photo.
