This is an interesting, somewhat basic article, but number eight is just wrong, wrong, wrong. more misinformation.

Pearls of wisdom: 10 things you should know about cultured pearls
By Mara S. Miano

8. Worth the price. Saltwater pearls, especially South Sea pearls, are expensive because it takes a saltwater oyster up to five years to make one single pearl. Freshwater mussells, on the other hand, only take six months, and can be reused to make 50 to 100 pearls. Saltwater oysters cannot grow another pearl after one has been harvested.

When I was a journalist we called them advertising pieces - clearly part of the deal for this event here. At the paper where I worked there was nearly a strike when management wanted to blurr the distiinction between advertising paid for stuff and editorial copy. These days in the UK these sorts of advertorial are usually thrown together by soimeone in the advertising department, not editorial writers, and it looks as if that is what happened with this piece (one other glaring error is that in the photo caption something with a clasp which appears to be a necklace is described as a ring)
(though of course Jewelmer would denegrate freshwaters...no matter how much we love Jewelmer, they are in the business of selling south sea pearls, not freshwaters)
