Trip to Myanmar January/February 2015.
I went to a trip to Ranong and into Myanmar (Kawthaung) in Myanmar to search for Melo Melo pearls and the outcome is below.
From Ranong Airport to the pier to Kawthaung is around 20 kilometers. First check out at the Thai Immigration and then in a longtail boat to another outer Thai customs post, followed an Thai Army post where soldiers check who is on board.
After some time the Myanmar outer posts checked the boat in the same way until we reached the city where the immigration stamped our passports.

Kawthaung is not an impressive city, except for the enormous number of fisherman boats. Same as in Ranong on the Thai side, the fishing industry overfishing the Andaman sea.
We were told to go and ask gold shops if they had Melo Melo pearls. Only one shop we found with one Melo Melo, but had to wait over an hour because it was somewhere in a safe.

Met up with one dealer who had around 7 Melo Melo and the best ones we looked at and the details you can see below.

Doing business is not easy as he knows what he is talking about and wants a good price. We told him that there are dealers with a stock and that Melo Melo move slower than he thinks. But we found that if anyone would come with money in his pocket a deal can be struck.
Had the feeling that he also wants money because he knows some Melo Melo for sale in the archipelago, which he wants to get also.

Well Cees, you certainly worked for those pearls !! They are gorgeous ! I'm so fascinated by them .. just mesmerising.

I've never been to Myramar but my husband went over on oil business a few years ago. He found it really interesting but they were taken everywhere from the time they landed till they left by government men. Got to do a little sightseeing .. with a government man. There was a fair bit of sectarian violence at the time so it might have been they were worried about them wandering around the country. It seems like the country is opening up quite a bit as there is a fair bit of advertising now for tour groups and river cruises..that seems fairly new.

What an amazing pearl and great adventure! Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you all for your comments. The Mergui Archipelogo has more than 800 islands. Kawthaung (Vitoria Point) at the border with Ranong in Thailand you can enter without a visa but you have to stay in a 28 km circle. To enter the archipelago you need a visa and an approval which has to be granted and that takes around 11 days. As there is hardly any accomodations, one needs to charter a boat and there are nice boats even with cabins with AC.

Just fascinating! Please post more pictures of your adventures and the pearls!

very cool Cees! I'm curious as well are you branching out into natural pearls now?

Please if you have more pics post them up, Burma has been on my travel list for some time now.

Dear Jeremy, as Myanmar is so close and I am of the opinion that due to pollution issues, dynamite fishing in the waters of Myanmar and the industrialization of the coast Melo Melo pearls will become more rare. They are too costly for me, but I wanted to do this expedition for a long time. For a trip into the Mergui archipelago you still need more people because a boat with accommodation has to be chartered ( see https://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=utf-8&fr=ytff1-&p=mergui princess&type= ) Then you can also visit the pearl farms there in that area.

I am convincing the seller of 5 Melo Melo pearls to come with me to the Hong Kong Fair, he might do that, but he needs a visa for Hong Kong and no idea where to get that. So maybe you could see them at the Fair.

Katbran, one was 26.10 ct and measured 14.52x15.36 mm, one was 42.50 ct, 17.24x17.48mm, another one was 22.15 ct, 14.37x14.41mm, one of 46.15ct, 18.48x18.61mm and one of 29ct, 14,90x19.12 mm.
