Just wanted to share this. This is a photo we just shot of a pair of natural color Akoya pearls, 8.5mm.

Aren't they incredible!

ABSOLUTELY !!! Could this be a breakthrough towards a new line of untreated akoya ?

If so, GOOD LUCK !!!

If we could get them in larger quantities, perhaps. We'll be introducing them in our sale tomorrow.

No clue! Granted if the nacre is too thin or brittle and won't last long no pearl, no matter the great color or luster it has, can't be too worthwhile.

Are these Vietnamese?

Hi Nora,

I don't know if by saying they are of a natural colour, it would necessarily mean the pearls haven't been subjected to any other heavy duty post harvest beautifying treatments.

What could those diabolical interventions be?

Bleaching?

Polishing?

Coating?

Something else?

Can we rule any out ?

... I suppose coating can be ruled out by observation. And polishing is accepted anyway. How about them?

Is bleaching ruled out with other color modifying treatments by the 'natural color' claim?

So many questions ! Does anyone care about them?

Whatever I might feel about the 'thin skin' problem, untreated skin is still a step closer t pearl heaven then treated ;) Methinks.

No, these aren't Vietnamese. They're from China. They've been polished (no pieces of mantle tissue still hanging on LOL). No bleaching, coating, heat treatments, etc.

Oh yes, those really are a beautiful color! It's amazing how pretty akoyas are when they aren't treated.

Any idea of nacre thickness? Just curious, frankly. 'Never thought I'd fall for Akoya pearls, ever! I've been lucky to see a natural one... and these at least give the same warm fuzzy feeling  (Oops for the all-nacre fans, I'm one too... experiencing a whiff of multiple personality disorder at the moment).

I don't know on the nacre thickness. If we have an extra, I'll cut it and let you know.

These pearls though they may be natural in color have most likely still been bleached. This is the standard process with Akoyas. I believe what Terry was pointing out was the great coloration of the pearls. He didn't mention that they were untreated.

I'm confused. He claims "no bleaching".

The silver tint I sort of see in the glamorous picture made me hope that these were not bleached... that they are some of those akoya that are naturally near-white...

'Guess there's one way to find out ;)

LOL Of course they are not bleached. I wasn't joking when I said they are a natural color. They've been cleaned and polished.

My parents were up here visiting today, and I showed these to my mom... she is buying me a pair of the earrings and a strand of the baroques for Christmas. I just placed the order. I am really excited, and I'm looking forward to seeing them in person (but less excited about then handing them over to Mom to keep for me until Christmas <LOL>).
