Most secure way to string gemstone beads?

Total beginner here with a question about stringing gem beads. I'm not sure how to begin.

I have two strands of 4mm gemstone (lapis) beads that I want to string as a double strand necklace on a pearl clasp. It would be a huge bummer if the necklace broke and I lost the beads.

I thought I'd learn to knot and string the beads using thread, with a knot about every 5 beads, so that if the strand broke I'd only lose a few. But this thread about tiny beads suggests using wire and crimp beads.

Which is more secure?

Which is better for a two strand necklace, so both strands lay well together?

If wire is better, are there ways to secure the beads so that if the wire breaks you won't lose them all?

Wire and crimp beads, because the rough edges of the drill hole can cut through thread.

I've never had the wire break, not even the very fine Soft Touch wire.
