Is it my bad eyesight or did the jeweler who restrung them forget to knot between all the pearls except for the 2nd and 3rd pearl.

I think that is the knot after passing it through the clasp and doubling back through a couple of beads. It certainly does appear to be the only knot.

Hi Caitlin and Slraep,

This is a typical thing for old Japanese pearl necklaces that they are only knotted for the first 2 to 5 pearls next to the clasp in graduated strands. There even appears to be some kind of ranking there: Sterling 2 pearls, 8k 3 pearls, 10k 4 pearls, 14k 5 pearls and from 18k they are knotted all the way through. Beats me why.
