i'm just pleased as punch to see one that doesn't look like an orange ping pong ball (see old thread). Gives credibility to the category. Color is right for genus.

As with those bizarre Abalone baroques of immense size, it's not about the beauty but rather the huge mass of color. This, if certified, would have significant value to collectors and make a fine centerpiece in a latter-day objet d'art. Visible flame would be a bonus, and it would sure be great to have better shots.

Yup, and 102 carats is no slouch either. It's a wonderful pearl.

Natural and cultured pearls should never be compared to one another. We don't call indigenous plants ugly or valueless simply because they don't look like roses.

could it not be a cassis cornuta pearl? because there are lots of white spaces in the picture and the shape so far i have only see cassis go this shape and not melo melo

Calcareous streaks or non-round shapes are not limited to any single species. The OP stated melo, but perhaps can elaborate more on the origin of the pearl.

i know they make lots of baroques just because the pearl is quite flat and the color shift made me think about it ( just saying )

anyway great pearl ! it would make a amaaaaazing pendant

Daniel, that was the first thing I thought, but it is rather orangey. In the hands of a designer, it could make a gorgeous piece of jewelry!

Well, the 2012 Pantone color of the year is Tangerine Tango, so this pearl is right in style!

Conchas' attribution was melo, not melo melo. Thus my reference to 'genus' vs. 'species.' Yes C. Cornuta is a possibility but the Cassis range of color wants to reside on the brickish side of orange.
