Can anyone shed any light or otherwise simply speculate as to the extraordinary price difference in the market today between freshwater and saltwater
natural pearls?
The attached natural freshwater pearl weighing 7.84ct, for example, would command a price in excess of US$ 7000/ct were it certificated as a saltwater pearl, as it is pretty much perfectly round and completely flawless, as well as being an excellent size. But this example, with GIA certification as 'freshwater', has a market price a fraction of this...
In terms of both rarity and beauty, it is difficult to see much significant difference between the two.
Or is it possibly the case that a pearl such as this (from the USA) will command a much higher price at its source than in the wider international market?
All comments/theories much appreciated!
