In August 2009, a Japanese pearl dealer named Hitoshi Ohsaka told police in Puerto Rico that while on a buying trip to the island, he was struck over the head and robbed of a backpack containing 47 conch pearls and $4,000 in cash.

Conch pearls, formed by the queen conch, "are extremely rare and valuable," according to the online source Pearl-Guide.com. "It is estimated that only one in 10,000 conchs produces a pearl, and that less than 10 percent of those are of gem quality."
