Hello all!

My boyfriend and I are looking for a white/cream, round, nacreous natural pearl, between 6.5-7mm with a certificate of authentication for my engagement ring. We are having a hard time finding (or getting responses from) natural pearl sellers. Just wondering if anyone on this forum would have any ideas for any leads for who I can contact who may have something like this. I would appreciate any thoughts!

Thanks!

Perhaps the sellers feel that they don't have "round" natural pearls to satisfy your requirements. Some natural pearls will be rounded, or perhaps more button shape; these would be easier to locate than a perfect round, I'd think. Not good customer service if you are getting no replies at all, though.

Congratulations on your engagement.

Round naturals with certificates are expensive, really expensive. Very often, a certificate is little more than a value add as opposed to verifying the origin and species.

Bona fide dealers of natural pearls stake their reputation upon providing the market with genuine naturals. As such, are able to do so without needless expenses.

We have a renowned expert in natural pearls on this forum. His name is Jeremy Norris. His user name is jnorris. He has provided several people on this forum with natural pearls for engagement rings. If you Google "Jeremy Norris pearls", you will find, at the top, several articles on pearl guide regarding him, of which, this is the first.https://www.pearl-guide.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2190&page=1

He is a delight to google! Sorry, I have to go immediately , but look him up in the members tab.

Hi all,

Thanks for your reply. I am from Los Angeles, and I know that natural pearls aren't typically exactly rounded. I am ok with a button natural pearl, that may be more rounded.

PattyE, as you've said, from most of the pearl sellers, I've actually just not heard anything from them. It would be nice to even know that they do not have anything to that specification.

Dave, it's good to know re: that you a certification is expensive and often simply just add value. I would actually be ok with paying for the certification myself, since this is the first time I am buying a natural pearl, just for my own knowledge.

Caitlin, thanks for your suggestion. I messaged Mr. Norris through the forum last week, and had also emailed him a few days later, but have not heard from him yet. My fiance's best friend also works for PearlParadise, and also had emailed Mr. Norris weeks ago, and have not heard from him. I am sure he is a very busy man, so I'm just patiently awaiting and hoping that he will respond at some point.

Thank you all for your help so far.

Well, maybe you can use your connection to PP to roust him! Jeremy used to have a few natural seapearl rings. I guess they are sold, but if they are, it took years. So that kind of merchandise does not turn over well.

We have one other guy, Tom Stern, MD. There is a thread here called Tom Stern's natural pearls with a bunch of photos. He also has contact info on the thread. He is seeking to be the high, high high, high, end in selling pearls, but maybe it is worth asking him. I think his son actually does the website. He has some round south sea naturals that are stunning, but he ran into trouble getting them certified. The lab called them "keshi" not natural. Nevertheless, they are round and solid nacre. Knockouts! I don't know why the labs did that, so now after spending fortunes, he does not get some pearls certified, but stands behind them with fairly good provenance. So check him out.

Dawn (member name, Bodecea) has some uncertified pearls that are old enough that they are probably naturals. They look like it. Maybe you could work a deal to pick one out and get it certified, yourself, as part of the deal. She has one I love. It is missing a little chunk on one edge and you can see multiple layers of nacre. I would buy that one, if I could. I don't mind the missing chunk, it is pretty small, but she has some others, too, all probably antique, indicating they might be naturals.

Here are a couple of the ones I like:The one I would wear and another one. bigFW3bigFWtiny1

I would actually be ok with paying for the certification myself, since this is the first time I am buying a natural pearl, just for my own knowledge.

Have you tried to contact Kari Anderson? She has naturals available on her website at http://www.karipearls.com/saltwater-natural-pearls.html

I'm not sure which ones are certified, but like the dealers Caitlin mentioned earlier, Kari has a vast knowledge of pearls and an outstanding reputation. She often brokers naturals from private sources or small, but rare collections.

According to your description of needs, a natural pearl from Bahrain may be suitable. They tend to be highly nacreous, near round and priced according to current market value. Very often, they come with a certificate.

Natural pearl dealers tend to be globe-trotters, often visiting remote parts of the planet, out of reach of internet and mobile phones. I realize wedding plans are imperative, but a little patience with natural dealers will eventually lead to something nice.

I think Bahrain/Persian Gulf pearls are the ultimate. And that is what Kari has. and certified to boot, with no controversy about being keshi or whatever. they are not large. Or cheap.

Caitlin & Dave - thanks for referring me to Kari. I have actually been in touch with her for about a week! She was the most responsive pearl dealer, and very kind. She does not currently have exactly what I am looking for, but she did refer me to the American Pearl Company in TN. Since they only do wholesale to other jewelers, my ring designer is now in touch with them, and I am waiting to hear back from what is coming out of their conversations.

Caitlin, thanks for your suggestions for those additional contacts! That is really helpful! I will get in touch with them if things fall through with the American Pearl Company. Thanks also for clarifying that Bahrain/Persian Gulf Pearls are what I should be focusing on. As I am still a newbie at my pearl education, it's good to learn from both of you in this process. I was looking at quite a number of Kari's Persian Gulf pearls, though what she has in stock are a little bit smaller than what I am looking for, as a possible option if we can't find one the size of what our ring designers are suggesting (6.5-7mm).

Thanks to you both!

I have an alternate suggestion, if you are unable to find a larger pearl suitable to your needs.

Perhaps you might consider a ring made from smaller naturals, surrounding another stone. The availability of naturals in the 3-5mm range is much greater than pricey solitaires.

Jeremy still has this one

Thanks Dave and Alex, those are certainly great ideas. We actually have this ring designed already, because of a lot of Christian symbolism within this ring (cord of three strands, Trinity, infinity): http://www.markschneiderdesign.com/home/bridaldetail/1/enchantment.html We are looking for a pearl for the middle instead of the diamond for the Christian symbolism to go along with it:

Alex, I have seen that ring on Pearl Paradise, and it is a beautiful ring. Caitlin, the link to that ring is: http://www.pearlparadise.com/Antiqu...Ring-with-3-Natural-Saltwater-Pearls3321.aspx

Just found out that our ring designer did end up talking to the American Pearl Company yesterday, and they are sending 2 for us to look at and choose by next weekend.

Thank you all for your help, I am grateful for how each of you have taken time to help me in this process that still required a lot of learning for me! I will post pictures if we end up going with one of them and have the pearl set.

hi annyeh

that's a lovely design

you've clearly done your homework and put a lot of effort into this, so am really glad you have 2 natural pearls on the way now, to try :)

happy engagement also - would love to see a picture of the ring when it is finished

Hello annyeh,

As Caitlin mentioned I do have quite a few natural pearls suitable or in a ring. I could send you photos of all my larger pearls which would be suitable for your ring or post them here on the forum. I have included my email address if you want to contact me. I do have both white and cream naturals suitable. I have been busy and had the flu so didn't see your post before now. Good luck and welcome.
