Is this a pearl?

I am trying to find out if this is a pearl or a different kind of stone. I am confused about this one.

It's very shiny ...looks to me like a polished cabochon of some kind.

Maybe. Try shining a pen light at it and see how translucent it is and if there are patterns. It also looks like it could be sugilite. Look at the bottom and see if there is a post drilled into the pearl besides having prongs. Prongs-only could suggest that it's a quahog pearl.
