I inherited my mother's pearl necklace 42 years ago. It was given to her by her father when she was sixteen, which makes them approximately 50 years old. They are in their original case that is shaped like a clam shell and were purchased on Long Island in the state of New York. My grandfather always purchased the best, but I don't know what exactly that is in regards to this necklace since the paper work is missing. My camera didn't do the necklace justice. Every photo taken made the pearls look too white or too yellow. Thank you for your time. Andrea

Welcome, Andrea,

Please retake a couple of photos of your strand on a white paper towel. Use the macro on your camera to take a photos of a section of pearls close up and also a photo of the clasp. That will be very helpful. What is the length of the necklace? And can you estimate the size of the pearls?

You can also try rubbing 2 pearls gently together, if they seem gritty, likely genuine pearls; very smooth, imitation pearls.

In the 50's and 60's high quality imitation pearls were sold by the fine jewelry stores, individually knotted with a nice clasp, presentation box and a price tag of several hundred dollars, which was quite a lot of money back then!

You have a family treasure for sure!

Use the macro on your camera to take a photos of a section of pearls close up and also a photo of the clasp.

When using macro settings, zoom the lens fully, pull the camera back somewhat (as opposed to right up to the object), then crop the image.

Zoom causes light to pass slower and helps eliminate bright spots, while allowing darker regions to saturate better.
