Hello, I purchased this necklace yesterday from a gentleman who was selling a few items from his wife's estate and wanted to see if anyone could provide any information on it. They were not expensive, I just thought they were beautiful. I don't have much knowledge about pearls, but have seen some great posts on this forum!

My responses to the questions are below.

1. Do the pearls feel slightly gritty or smooth when rubbed gently against another pearl? They feel slightly gritty. I did a quick tooth test on two of them.

2. Please provide clear, in-focus photos without flash against a white background (a paper towel works nicely.)
I've taken photos outdoors in sunlight, if indoor lighting would be helpful too let me know. No box or tags were included.

3. Any history you can give us about the pearls. Where/when you or your relative got them, any documentation you have (receipts, appraisals), their price range if you know it, etc. The seller thought these may have been purchased as early as the 20' through the 50's by his wife's grandfather for her grandmother. To me, the clasp style looks to be more on the vintage/modern side.

4. Describe any marks on the clasp. These may be numbers (14K, 585, 750, 925 etc.) or brand names or even pictures. If the clasp has stones, have you had them tested, or do you have documentation about what they are? They clasp is marked 14K585, but has not been tested. It has a black stone but I'm also not sure what it is.

5.
Measure the pearls, with a millimeter ruler if possible. If they are graduated, measure the largest and smallest pearls. I have put a US penny for reference, if it would be helpful I'll get my husband to do a more precise measurement.

Great job answering the questions!

They are baroque akoya pearls! You can see the bead inside one of them where the nacre is missing.
The stone could be onyx. Clasp is 14K gold by its markings; gold used to be much less costly so I don't doubt it.
Given the relative cost of gold now vs. those pearls, I'd say the clasp is the most valuable part of the necklace.

Do you think you would like to wear them? They really need a bath and restringing. It's not hard! I have a tutorial here:

Before restringing, give them a bath. Soak them for 15 minutes or so in distilled water (to avoid chlorine and hard water minerals) with a bit of mild soap swished in it. Wipe them clean with a soft cloth, brush or swabs. Rinse in more distilled water, and lay them to dry on a towel for about 24 hours, to give the silk inside the drill holes time to fully dry.

Thank you so much for the quick and detailed response! Yes, I would like to wear them and wondered about restringing. I'll read your tutorial and see if I can get that figured out. They definitely need a bath - I actually scrubbed them a bit (they were worse!) but wasn't sure if I could soak them so I'll do that too, but I am not confident the string will clean up enough.

The thread will be cut away and replaced with new thread, so don't worry about its getting clean enough.

When you restring them, if you like, you can choose another clasp. Or use the same one.
You can also omit the pearls that are in the worst condition, if you like. Or rearrange them so the ones you like best are in front.
You can also decide if you want to shorten it. How long is it now? What length do you prefer?

I didn't think about all of those options but it would be a good time to customize it. It is almost 33 inches long now. I generally prefer shorter pearl necklaces but may keep it around the current length since I have a more classic-looking necklace already. I haven't actually even tried it on yet, so I guess that would be the first step!

Assuming the clasp is original, do you have any idea what time period it might be from?

I don't, sorry!
Not a problem at all! Maybe someone else will have a guess or I can do a little more digging on the clasp style.
