help ! a new person purchasing tahaitian pearl

Hi I have a question, my husband wanted to purchase a tahaitian pearl

pendant for me for my birthday, so we went to two store to pick them out.

However, never buying them before, I am so confused, here are the two

different color I saw First one has green based tone and after putting a white

paper under it, can't see any other overtone, except green (so green all

around) the other one has darker green based tone but have dark pink or

purplish overtone.

So my question is which one is better to an experienced buyer like you guys,

and also the jeweler told me the first one is peakcock, but I've seen peacock

color at another store that look different (kind of dark green/bluish color) so

what is peacock color exactly ?

Dear confused person,

True peacock pearls should have a rich, dark teal (bluish green) body color and magenta (pink on the verge of being purple) overtones with a silvery or goldish fringe like the eyes in a peacock's tail feathers. Solid green colors are not peacock and neither are grey pearls with green and pink overtones.

Zeide is right, but you should not think that the jeweler was being intentionally dishonest about the peacock color. Many in the industry consider a green color to be peacock (albeit incorrectly). The pearls do both sound nice, however, I would not choose one over the other based on value. I suggest selecting the pearl that looks best against your skin.

So if the one I saw is green based tone,with dark purple /cherry color over tone, (not gray based tone) is it a good buy or not ?

I guess this would be completely determined by the price they are asking and the size of the pearl If the pearl is round, with a high luster and clean surface (for a single, stand-alone pearl the surface should be perfectly clean), it has a good value.
