We ply an ancient craft we pearl sellers.
I was watching a documentary series on the BBC last week and the Oxford prof who has made it was reading out the inscription on a roadside tomb marker for one Gaius Attilius Euhodes. He was a pearl seller in ancient rome.
I have asked Dr Beard if she can furnish any more details but it makes me just a little warm to think of the connection through time.
We are margaretarius and margaretaria(if I have the latin right (it is 47 years since I studied latin)

Eeeeeeeeee! Is this the professor who explored/excavated a churchyard (well, somebody's yard, maybe it was a pub) and uncovered the site of a burial of massacred roman soldiers, buried in 'Disgraced' attitudes? It made me want to be right there in the mud, AND hoof it to an ancient's library.

Rats. I can't get it either. Well, maybe we should hoof it to the Local[ library instead of an Ancient's library.

03Dr Beard sent me a photo of the stone. I'll see later if I can find the clip on youtube or the like.
Dr Beard is a classicist at Oxford, not an archaeologist (no excavating)
 
That fits! The professor wasn't excavating, another woman was, and this woman was i think a forensic medical examiner with a team. They were versed in violent death, I think one of the groups that work around the world at scenes of traumatic death (massacres included) and mass burial.
 
Further info
the stone is on the Via Appia... which is now an archaeological 'zone'... A new book on the Appian Way (by R Kaster) explains EXACTLY where it is. But basically you leave Rome by the Porta San Sebastiano and its a few kilometres out. The important thing to know is that the first kilometre is a horrible traffic rat run, then it gets nicely rustic..

Basically the stone says
'I entreat you, traveler, don't damage this tomb in any way. Gaius Atilius Euhodus, freedman of Serrano, seller of pearls on the Via Sacra, lies in this monument.Traveler farewell...

So any pearl folk in rome, please call in and say hello, and show Gaius your pearls. What changes he will see (but all those naturals he sold!)
if anyone can tell me (shhhhh) how to get the clip off the BBC website I will - or you can find out if/when Meet the Romans will be available in your country
