I'm afraid I don't see how that could be a pearl...it could not have grown in the body of the snail that once occupied the shell, being so large.

Could it just be some object that drifted through the water and landed in the opening of an empty shell?

An operculum? A kind of door they grow to protect themselves. Great photos.

I think Gemgeek is correct, it's an operculum. It looks like Shiva's eye shell, or Gomati shell as they call it in India which is actually an operculum
