I want to buy a necklace for my wife (44) but I don't know whether to buy really nice FWP ($300), nice akoya SWP ($900), or Rolex style Mikimoto ($2000+). If I buy a cheaper (but very pretty) Freshadama set, will all the girls in the office think I don't love her?
Does anyone even ask if they are fresh or salt?

Haha, I thought your post was cute. If it was me, I'd want (have) the high quality freshwaters. I don't think anyone has asked if they were freshwater or saltwater but I wouldn't care if they did. Also, if it was me, I would rather be consulted than be surprised. I got a longer strand, larger pearls, and the earrings too, and it was still way less than the akoyas. Those are my thoughts, but your mileage may differ. Good luck with it! 
P.S. Also, just in case it's helpful, when we ladies get a few years on us, the neck tends to get crepey and a shorter strand emphasizes it, horrors! You might want matinee length.

Speaking for the UK, I'm certain that only a few even know that there is a difference.
With Mikimoto you are paying a huge premium for a box and a brand. If you are going to spend that much, you might consider an unbranded strand of white south seas (big pearls!)
My advice (if you were my customer) would be to consider a strand/set of metallic coloured freshwaters, either mixed colours or single colour. There are many very good fake white pearls around even in the supermarkets here. Coloured pearls are more flattering to older skins too

I second asking her what she would prefer. Her opinion is more important than that of the ladies at the office. If she wears them with pride, that will speak volumes to anyone who looks at them.
She might surprise you and prefer non-white pearls-- Tahitians (the baroque shapes are very pretty and much more affordable than rounds) or the metallic freshwaters as Wendy suggested.

Or the pearls could be exchangeable. Personally I prefer surprises. I doubt if anyone would even know the difference between freshwater and akoya. They might even think you love her more for taking the time to investigate the matter properly.

I agree, Buy the item she adores, & will wear and always think of how wonderful a man she married. Even if you ask her. You still get "Brownie points" & "Kudos" as a husband. Keep it up & you'll Give Superman a run for his money!!

My choice would be a nice set of Freshwaters in the larger size range perhaps say 10mm or so, really good quality with a matching pair of stud earrings. And in case you'd rather keep it a surprise (and not ask her beforehand), stick to white pearls as they always work. Of course, freshwaters have gorgeous natural colours of lavender and peach pink too, but you should only go for the colors if you are sure she likes them.

If someone were willing to go up to 2000 for me, I think I'd be looking at Tahitians, but that's another story. I'd go with what you think your wife will love, what will look great on her, and what will make you smile every time you see them on her, and forget about everyone else.

Now my answer would be the good freshwater pearls..but take her by a nice jewelry store and see what she likes then check out the prices on the same thing with some of the wonderful online stores represented on this forum.
Personally, I try to be very helpful and always try to point to things and say "Boy, I REALLY like that .... that one right there...second from the left...sure would like that for xmas/birthday/whatever .." I doesnt work...but I try...
