Question for all of the trade experts. I was looking at my collection of non-nacreous natural pearls and it became very obvious which ones had been polished and which ones hadn't. It made me think why hasn't any of the dealers ever mentioned the polishing. Then I started reading through the CIBJO Pearls book and noticed this:
4.8.2.1. No requirement for declaration.
Natural pearls (5.114), which have only been polished (5.143), buffed (5.27), peeled
(5.135) and /or, cleaned2 (5.36), do not require this information (polished, buffed,
peeled, cleaned) to be stated in their description at the point of sale (5.142).
I find this interesting in the sense that you can remove blemishes, or alter the surface luster without having to declare as long as you don't alter the shape (in which case it becomes working). But I am required to mention that pearls require special care at the point of sale.
Any comments?
