Debunking a Widely Held Japanese Myth
I finally took the time to read this article today and parts of it did make me smile. I never did meet the man. I know of him by reputation only.
But why is it marked as latest news? I first heard about this in 1996 / 97. If I remember correctly there was an article in the Sunday Times (Western Australian newspaper) around that time as well.
An interesting opinion piece on Dennis George can be found here. Google cached here for easy reference.
Also any links to his report to the FAO entitled "The Pearl" would be greatly appreciated. The only reference I could find to Dennis George at the FAO is in a 1974 report "Develpoment of Marine and Brackish Water Aquaculture in Israel". Link here and pdf here.
There's an interesting paragraph here where the author of the website is accused of being a spy for the Japanese by Mr. George.
Makes me wonder if Mr. George actually found any substantial evidence to suppost his case or is it just one last dig at the "Japanese pearling industry" that he blames for his lack of success. Though when it comes to pearl farming I've heard he was his own worst enemy.
