Chrsities Auction - A few interesting pieces!

I was at Christies in NYC this afternoon for their Impressionist and Modern Art preview. Of course I had to swing by the jewelry room...and I'm on a mission to make my interpretation of this piece: IMG_2778.jpg
Those are emeralds and natural pearls...you can't see the magnificent diamond clasp on the back, but it is an impressive piece! I've posted some videos of the spectacular diamonds on my Instagram.
And here's a link to the piece for the details: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/...8622&sid=c0493e5d-9520-42cd-bc56-8aed1cdf2ea9

Wow, some of those pieces in that catalog are really tacky looking for expensive jewelry. That tiara was too over the top, even for me. I can't believe I just wrote that.

Many of the pieces in that catalog had me drooling. The jadeite pieces were absolutely stunning. I had no idea jadeite could look like that, or be that expensive. I think I need to appreciate Mom's jade bracelet more.

BWeaves, I struck up a nice conversation with the auction specialist, while wiping up my drool off their cases...I was wearing my Tahitian and pink sapphire necklace, matching bracelet and lavender jadeite bangle and she took one look at my wrist and asked if I'd like to try on any piece....hahaha.
You really should have that jadeite bangle certified (if it isn't already)...jadeite can be more expensive than a diamond. Yours is a lovely lovely color!

Thanks JP! I just bought Renee Newman's book on Jade (Exotic Gems vol. 4) just to find out more about it. My Mom really had exquisite taste. The more I read and compare Mom's bangle to the items in the book, the more I realize how expensive it must have been. I realize that it's not a solid bangle (which would have upped the price considerably) because it's hinged, but it's really gorgeous.

Also, I can't wait to see how you recreate that necklace!!!

I loved looking at that catalogue ...wow that was fun ! I too was stunned at the prices of the Jade.. I remember the Jade necklace selling for 27million dollars and thinking...green beads... I don't get it. lol Frankly I have no idea what so ever as to the value or how one determines why one green bead is worth more than another. I'd have to read up on it that's for sure because it's a mystery to me. I love all your Jade bangles and think they look as nice as the ones in the catalogue. :)

Katbran: I know what you mean. Green beads hardly seem worth that much money. On the plus side, maybe they wouldn't be stolen. It seems that when the jadeite is very clear and good color, approaching the sort of look you would expect from "real" gemstones, then the price skyrockets. By "real" I mean the gemstones most people know, like sapphire, ruby, emerald, etc.

I read that jadeite always feels cold to the touch. I think a jadeite bead necklace would feel wonderful in Florida in the summer. Pearls always feel very warm to me, and I prefer to wear them in the winter.

I have the great fortune of working for Christies and being able to see these jewels in NYC ALL day! I find it really interesting that in their catalogues and descriptions, they never refer to the pearls as South Sea or Tahitian when they clearly are. Even when they have a GIA cert. They will designate them as saltwater, though. It is just so amazing and gratifying to see the signed pieces by famous jewelers and be able to handle them. Please! If you are ever in NYC during a preview for jewels...next one is June 20 auction, Magnificent Jewels! Come to the preview 4 days before that! Ask for me if you get there. I would love to meet you.

Judi, I absolutely will! This particular necklace blew me away...I just loved how those carved emeralds looked next to the off round shaped pearls.

Hi Judi--
I noticed that most of the pearls on the website were described as natural pearls which I assume to to not cultured pearls rather found pearls. Is that correct? Is that how Christie's catagorizes them as well?

So many beauties but i have no money to purchase from Christie's and have no reasons to wear those treasures. May be some day money could be but the reasons to wear? Girls are you wear often big diamonds? And what place or party for them?

Hey there Pearly-Whites,
Yes Jersey is right. If there are designated "natural", then they have a certificate from an established lab that has qualified that. They have to be VERY careful!

Naan, I inherited a few big diamonds from my Mom. I figure if I wear them with jeans and the grocery store, people will think they're fake. Fingers crossed.

I saw some carved emerald beads on Ebay for a good price, obviously no where near the quality of the ones in that necklace, these were opaque and oil treated, but paired with some nice freshwaters would give a decent facsimile of the necklace for a budget price. jaipur_jewels I think.

Since this link to the auction sale seemed to go down quite well here is another upcoming sale you may be interested in: http://www.tianchengauction.com/TIANCHENG/pdf/Tiancheng-HK019-Jewellery_and_Jadeite_catalogue.pdf

Will be popular for those who appear to like jadeite. However, although I do like jadeite, the design of lot 228 is more interesting to me personally. Seems a nice way to remove your pearl and perhaps replace with other pearls in the collection providing you have a collection where the pearls are all of a similar size of course!

I think the bigger the diamond, the more people will assume they're fake. I wear my diamond studs almost every day (though they are not huge, they are clearly worth quite a bit of money). I've never had anyone react to them. I actually like wearing my "nice" jewelry on a very "every day/casual" basis, cause life (at least mine ☺️) is based mostly on such days. I would not want to have my best things sitting in a box when I could be enjoying them every day. I think I got this philosophy after my dad passed away suddenly a couple of years ago. He would save all of his "nicer" clothes for special occasions, and when he died a lot of his things was still unworn. That's not how I want to live my life. So I will bring out the best plates and our crystal wine glasses any day that I feel like it, and I would wear pearls to taking out the trash or doing my laundry, if that makes me happy. (And it clearly does ;))

I so agree with you raggdoll. I take my pearls camping, and wear them everyday. Admittedly, I tend to wear the simpler ones, and we "cheat" camp in a vintage silver trailer, but still ... and my friends tease me all the time when I show up in pearls, jeans and a flannel shirt for breakfast LOL. My mother-in-law still had "the good towels in the linen closet, with the tags on" at 93 when she passed away. Nope, not me :)
