Can a fresh water pearl (12mm) looks like a south sea one?

The husband brought this strand home from a small jewelry store in the town. he was told that it is a real south pearl strand because normally fresh water pearls cannot go up to 12 mm. Its tag with price of $3600, but the owner gave him 40% off.

but funny thing is that I happened to purchased a larger FWWP strand by myself before mother's day, so I don't believe what the store owner's comments. I compare it with my fresh water pearl necklace, I can not tell the difference besides the size and tone. I took another picture with two strands together. the large one is the FWWP with a center pearl about 14 mm.

Your help / feedbacks would be greater appreciated!

Thanks.

The smaller strand is a little bit whiter than the bigger one, but the surfaces are not smooth like my other south sea pearl ring.

Do you have a close-up photo of the pearls, especially closer to the clasp where they appear to be eggy (is it also a bit egg-shaped in the front)? It looks like a freshwater strand to me, but I'd like to see it better to be sure.

I'm leaning freshwater as well, we need closer pics to say for sure though. I quite possible the jeweler just doesn't know any better and assumed they must be South Sea because of the size. For the record, Freshwater pearls do come in sizes larger then 12mm.

Thanks Jeremy,
I took a few pictures, those four pearls close to the clasp do like egg-shaped.
