Big Pearls and A Split Pearl

I recently did a complimentary re-stringing of these pearls for my mother's friend and couldn't resist taking a photo of the finished job. Any excuse to get a feel of pearls in another size and to practice more stringing.
I find I love to take close-up shots of pearls and their knots. Took me a few attempts to get the string/ knot size right. The pearls were heavy but the holes were not as big as I expected.
Strangely, the holes seemed smaller than they were for my own 6mm pearls. I thought that holes get bigger as pearls get bigger or maybe that's just an illusion given the larger size of the pearls.
Anyway, they're about 11mm and not round but I think I am developing a preference for pearls that aren't round. I actually like the ridge around the pearls and the luster is quite good. I think they have more character than a boring round strand.
I have to give them back to their owner today. Kind of wish I didn't have to but at least I have the photo souvenir.

I also have another photo of a pearl that fell clean off one of my aunt's strands. Being able to string pearls makes one kind of popular in the family :) Everyone is bringing out their secret strands.

Anyway, she asked me to re-string this strand and as I was finishing off, this last pearl cracked clean in half...I was pretty upset because I have to do the whole strand again and tell its owner about the loss but my shock and dismay was put on hold by what I found inside that split pearl - imagine my surprise at finding a pearl within a pearl! There was also a big ridge around each pearl in this strand but the luster and size was not as good as the whole strand you see in my photos.

I thought I would share it on here and see what others might have to say. Is this a common thing at all? I didn't expect this but it was a nice little surprise to see for someone new to pearls. Was the small pearl inserted into the mollusk or did the pearl grow inside it? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Junebug
Good stringing there.
The split pearl isn't unique, it has happened to me, but not for ages (now of course it will all week!). It isn't a pearl within a pearl, it is just that the crack has gone around the concentric layer there, rather than breaking across them. What you have is a great peek inside a pearl and something to show off when you start talking about pearls to people.

Hi Wendy,
Thanks for your explanation. I will ask to keep it as a souvenir. I had not seen the inside of a pearl before and it's not often that I am likely to deliberately saw one in half. I would like to saw more pearls in half just to satisfy my curiosity but it seems a shameful waste of good pearls.

One learns something new every day. Thanks for sharing your experience.

It looks to me ... that the the smaller pearl was used as the nucleus to grow a larger one... just my humble opinion.
Junebug: your photos are very good, and congratulations on the stringing efforts. The necklace looks beautiful, and it is nice to hear that your skills are making the ladies in your family happy!

Junebug,

Thanks for furthering our education with these great photos! The circle' pearls like these are generally inexpensive, large and can be very lustrous, like these! Congrats on your excellent knotting skills! Without equipment to saw a pearl, I have, on occasion, resorted to smashing--putting the pearl in a plastic bag, setting it on cement, then hitting with a hammer------

I initially thought they nucleated with a rice pearl too but I don't enough about pearl culturing to know what actually happens. As for the photography, I'm actually trying to learn how to take macro photos of my cooking efforts, my other hobby, so I like to come up really close.

Patteye, no saw used on this pearl. It just split clean in half as I was trying to pull the thread back through after the gimp. It was the last pearl. Don't you just hate it when you have to start again! Your efforts to split pearls made me laugh. I don't think I would want to use a saw just yet. I would like to do more stringing before I lose some fingers to a saw.

Stringing pearls is strangely addictive. Not a huge fan of starting and ending but the knotting is fun. It's nice to do something repetitive to get your mind off the day's work.

Ah yes, the power of a task that takes focus, concentration, and blots out all other concerns: it's like a meditation.
