Art Deco Pearl Necklace - what are the pearls?

Hi All,

I have a beautiful pearl necklace - Art Deco I believe, or so I was told quite a few years ago. The clasp is I am sure. White Gold and diamonds and the right shape etc.

But what type of pearls are they. They are Gold and Blue colors for the most part with a few pure whites. Centre one is 9.95mm, next 8.56 and down to 7.66 mm ... finally got calipers :)

But if they are Art Deco they cannot be freshwater pearls and they have a really beautiful lustre. I know now we can get FW pearls with beautiful lustres but 6 to 8 or so years ago it was not normal.

They are only 14.1/2" long and to short for me to wear them. So I would need to buy the correct matching pearls and restring them.

Really could do with some help as to what they are. I did buy them from eBay years ago and it must be at least 6 years to 8 years ago. One of my early purchases.

Please chime in all and give me your opinions as to what they are.

I know I could easily resell them but I still wouldn't know what they really are and I love them and don't really want to sell them anyway.

Thanks, Dawn

Does the clasp have anything on it? I have not yet seen an older multicolor. I hope someone else will chime in here.

Hi Caitlin,

Just checked the clasp. No marks that I can see but they are diamonds and it is Platinum.

I suppose the clasp could have been changed, not unusual as we know but I just don't think so. Of course I always look on the bright side.

The lustre indicates that maybe they are Akoya but I am not sure. Could these be Akoyas without treatment. i.e. the Blues and Gold. the colours are very subtle. But they are more vibrant than my photo is showing. True pale gold, true pale blue.

Thanks, I too hope someone else jumps in. Please fellas and ladies. Help me out :)

I think those could be natural color akoyas, but I think they are recent. Under 10 years old. I am not well educated on any of this. The luster isn't really that sharp as in the best akoyas.

How can you tell it is platinum? Maybe it is platinum vermeil, so to speak.
strange not to have the platinum mark. I think it could be a new clasp because the strand is so short, it seems to be missing pearls and someone tried to restore it.

Just typed out a whole lot of information and lost the lot. So will try again.

Hi Caitlin,

The pearls have a lot higher lustre in real life. I had the wrong light set up and it washed them out. Will try and take better in the sunlight. They are actually very beautiful. Must find extra matching pearls and re-string.

I know it is a Platinum clasp because I have an excellent Gold tester. Tests from 6 kt gold to 24 kt and also Platinum. Gives a digital read out. Also have a very good diamond test which tests for all kinds of synthetics including Mossanite (spelling) versus Diamond. Really handy especially when selling on eBay. Just have to know what things are. If I am not sure sometimes with coloured stones I say so. Working on some equipment I have but just not expert at using it yet.

I have seen a lot shorter Vintage necklaces. Ladies back then were inclined to be a lot smaller than we are today. Actually up until my late 40s I would have been able to wear it as is.
