Akoya and Tahitian black pearls

What is the differences between these? I'm looking at buying a single pearl pendant. I've done some research and noticed that the tahitians are predominantly featured in solitair pendents. Is there a reason for this? Also would it be preferable to try to buy the pearl loose and then mount it? Sorry for the multiple questions but if someone could clarify them it would be much appreciated!

I would suggest a Tahitian pearl over an Akoya pearl - most definitely.

One thing to remember if you are looking at black pearls - only the Tahitian pearl is naturally black - the Akoya pearl is dyed. The Tahitian is also going to be much more valuable.
