A Tahitian on eBay....

Wow! High quality is an extreme overstatement in this case. I'm seriously speechless.

Well, if you're looking for freshwater pearls (CFWP) of fairly low quality, but really huge, these will fit the bill.

I'm sure everyone who has posted thus far is aware that these aren't Tahitian pearls, but I figure I'd better be verbose for everyone’s sake.

This is the first time I've seen an eBayer with 57 negative feedback in a single year, and another 37 neutral in the same time period.

In my opinion, they are CFWP, not Tahitians, but they did get the "goat dropping" color I have seen on some Tahitians fairly well. Why they would pick that color is beyond me....
These are the same people that posted pictures of Zeide's pink double strand with the drop pearl on their site, so I look every now and then to see what they are up to- no good, of course!

The pearls are definitely CFWP. You can see that they've been dyed by the coloration of the nacre.

Hello, I have a bad experiment with that seller, saying pearls have been shipped twice, never received, same pictures used for severals auctions. Seller saying pictures are not thoses of the one sold !!!Avoid this on. Not all e bayers are bad, some are excellent pearls providers but rare.

I don't think more comments are needed. I seriously do not like it if people are selling pearls they do not have. If I want to buy the right to look at digital pictures of pearls, I would subscribe to a pertinent database. Buying the right to look at the digital picture of pearls and get a substitute is not going to do the trick for me.

Caitlin,

That goat has constipation or gastrointestinal bleeding if its droppings are that black.

Here's the post Zeide did with link to Zeide's gems on this person's site: https://www.pearl-guide.com/forum/showthread.php?t=398

Yeah...or old dried up ones. Honest I NEVER thought I would have to search among such words for a pearl color!
Are you gonna put up more mussel shells?

Hi Caitlin,

I am not sure what I am supposed to put up more mussel shells for? The only mussel shell I ever posted in a picture was just an example for how to dry a freshly washed pearl strand. It wasn't even the feature part of the picture. Was a mighty pretty picture, though.

Hi Cli-Clasp
You provide the other half of the picture. They put up Zeide's picture, sell the necklace- then don't send and say they sent it, or send a fake and say it's not. Is this scummy? The ultimate scum seller.

This means that even if I were to buy the goatdropping necklace pictured above - for $550, I might get a fake of it! Wow. This is legendary scum tactics.
Zeide,
you mentioned your eBay hall of shame on here somewhere. Can you post on that? What is it?

Hi Caitlin,

Whenever I find links to particularly nice and unusual nacre colors in freshwater mussels, I'll add them to the thread. Recently, I've been somewhat hard up for research time owing to yet another annual report. So, every time I am googling the one or other technical fact and its expression in English, I treat myself to a little pearl forum browsing but that takes hardly any time at all. Finding interesting and unusual nacreous shells and pictures thereof is far more time consuming.

Hi Cautlin,
Here is the 3 auctions number with same pictures - hope there are still on the site :
1 - 8910039830 was mine
2 - 8906623042 was a previous sale
3 - 8917499396 was a new auction
When I claimed about the pictures, the seller said she uses the same pictures for several baroques pearls auctions. Then I never received mine. And get refunded only when filing a claim though ebay. So That's the whole story. Good luck !

Hi Caitlin,

I like clasps with carved coral that have to be build around the carving and other clasps that are easy to manage and guaranteed free of diamonds and such. I have most of them made in Beijing. I e-mail my goldsmith pictures of the finished piece because I believe in joint efforts. Sometimes, that results in my necklaces popping up on eBay. My eBay Hall of Shame is a collection of most blatant discrepancy between description and actual object. Generally, I do not see much point in bidding on auctions that try to sell my pearls. One of the funnier ones offers a 20 inch strand of 12-14.5mm transgrafted cream white pinctada maxima cultured in hyriopsis hybrids as an 18-inch 8mm akoya strand. I keep seeing that particular picture quite often on eBay. Here is the original picture (the actual strand may be viewed in my house by appointment).

That is to say- pinctada maxima mantle tissue was used to nucleate a freshwater mussel? Is that the one that hibernates cause it lives up north?

Those pearls are about as pretty as it gets! Need my shades...

Hi Caitlin,

Yes. The hybrids handle the cold better than hyriopsis cumingii proper and accept foreign tissue better especially when nucleated during winter stasis (hibernation). However, the hybrids are infertile. That means you have to maintain breeding stock separately for new generations. They also seem to be particularly delicious to frankenfish.
