Hi all.....I'm making some 14k gold leverback drop pearl earrings for a girl's bridesmaids. In trying to hold down costs, I'm looking at using 14k GF headpins. However, I'm not sure if 14k GF or Vermeil would be better.

Thoughts?

I always use gold-filled headpins myself, unless I'm doing a custom piece or something that really features the headpin wire. I feel that the incidentals are just that, and they keep the costs way down. You also don't feel so bad when you mess one up!

PS - I think they'll match the 14k better. Most vermeil has higher carat gold covering, and is a different color than 14k. At least on this side of the ocean!

The gold fill is actually 14k gold fused to the outside of a piece, and is 5% of the total weight. So there is actually more gold on gold filled items. And yes, as Sheryl sez, the color differs. Vermeil will wear off faster if worn alot.

I have "heard" gold fill will last about 30 years or so. That's my usual choice also.

I also agree. I'm allergic to gold-filled jewelry and not to vermeil. I don't think gf headpins would trigger an allergic reaction used in an earring.

Please post pix of your results; we always like hearing from you.
