How much color difference is acceptable?

It is entirely possible to get darker color purple. Fading usually occurs on younger mussels that produce these pearls. If mussels are 3-4 years old, the color seems to be better. Also nacre shows less imperfections such as birthmarks. It's rarer to see this type of quality on Etsy as the site...

    Japan trip - Pearls edition

Looks like GP was higher in price due to the fact that the pairs shown in the pictures were all certed Hanadama. Some of the strands with cards attached to them are also certed material.

Paspaley "LAVALIER" perfect 15mm round pearl necklace

Interesting.. This design always gets me quirky. The gold on the inside of the cage/net design must be super high polished to minimize potential scratches on the pearl.

    Superficial scratch or discoloration?

Best to consider this as a characteristic that is shown in Edisons. Also easier for consumers to distinguish FWP Edison and a SSP (since fwp sizes are now in 14-16, 16-18, and 18-20mm ranges).

    Superficial scratch or discoloration?

Treating the color of the pearls does not remove these blemishes. You'll still see these marks regardless. I'd say these marks are very common since 80% of the edisons are commercial or lower in quality. And producers normally use mid to lower quality to treat into different colors.

    Superficial scratch or discoloration?

Those are what we called birthmarks. It's not above the surface, but underneath the surface. Not something you can buff out or fix. We categorize these is commercial grade pearls.
