Which to keep and which to part? Mikimoto/Southsea/vintage pearls

We moved a lot...and we always had the pressure of getting rid of things... so we tried to declutter everything... I would get rid of jewelry because it had to fit in my case...those are the things I regret getting rid of! I bought a second case, so I would not have that regret.

    Pearls

Hard question! If you are trying to sell them, look for similar on eBay and decide if it is worth selling. You need to know the metal of the clasp & "gems". You also need to know if those are faux or real. They are not knotted so they might be faux. In that case, they are only valuable as...

What pearls are these and how much should I ensure them for

My take on insuring jewelry is a little different. If it is valuable to you and you move, they should be insured. You need to look for a similar strand on eBay, Etsy or local antique store... What ever they are pricing it as, you can take a photo and insure it for that replacement value...

In Desperate Need of Mikimoto Experts!

So....I had a Mikimoto question...I called NY office... They are not very informative....but I kept asking questions, until I got some good answers. So if you can call and ask all around the problem...you might get some good answers as to dates, if Miki ever did enamel, where it might have been...

    Anyone come across this before?

Wonder if a jeweler had those tiny pearls as extra? I can't imagine sourcing those, if you needed them... Just such an interesting idea, bet it was someone creative! There are several wonderful antiques id facebook groups that help date and they often tell why they date it that way... super...

    Help Identifying Inherited Pearls

Wait... see those things at the ends of the imitation strand...those are bead cups. You can use those on the Real strand to make restringing easier. If you get a restringing kit from Pattye on Etsy, you can thread them all on to a new strong thread (These are not knotted, so you don't have...

    14k pearl clasp question

Thanks! I have seen vintage safety chains for pearls. I don't think it will bother me, so I will try that.

    Graduated Orchestra

And someone...can't remember who... suggested stringing using the method that lines up the pearls on one thread...then check it on your neck before you go back thru & knot it. That has saved me more than once.... At least I did NOT have to cut knots...just rethread pearls! (Sometimes pearls...

    14k pearl clasp question

This clasp doesn't have a safety catch (I think it broke off..from the hole). Anyone have experience with clasps coming apart? Do you think I can still use it on less expensive vintage pearls? My mother told me that "pearls have a safety catch so toddlers won't ruin your necklace." I realize...

    Vintage Mikimoto Bracelet and earring

So it depends... First they have to be clearly marked with the Mikimoto logo. There have been fakes...so an authentic logo is key. (If you post a clear logo...people can give their opinion.) If it is for insurance, look up Mikimoto on Ebay and get one that looks close in silver...use that for...

How much color difference is acceptable?

I wonder if taking photos of your pearls yourself will help you understand the actual colors... I know that my phone leans to very yellow (Could also be my lights too) and I really have to work to get my pearls to photo true colors.

How to tell the new very round freshwaters from Akoyas?

Speaking of reputable...I sold a lovely pair of Akoya earrings...that I just won't get around to wearing...the buyer wanted a certification. Vintage akoyas are easy...but I didn't have a certification.., they were NOT that expensive!.....so the buyer sent them back in a different box with a...

Any books or Websites on Vintage Japanese pearl Jewelry names and/or marks?

Thanks...(Not my photos). I thought it would be helpful when people ask for Pearl Maker ID for their inherited pearls. to have them all in 1 place. If you have any to add, please do! (I just read somewhere..that there was a disaster or economic downturn that caused many Japanese pearl...

1947 graduated pearls bought in China

Here is the huge problem: once that coating starts to loosen... it comes off in flakes and it looks horrible & makes a mess. If these are fun for you, I would get a nice case to keep them in and enjoy looking at them. There are glass cases or even antique case on Etsy. You can find Vintage...

    Mystery pearls

I THINK these are dyed freshwater, but they are such an odd shape. I have some others that are flatter & look like Cornflakes, but these are much more 3D. Are they souffle pearls? Are they something else? Am I right about dyed freshwater? Thanks
