    Unexpected discovery

Imitations, for various reasons. For one, it's not unusual in imitation strands to see one smaller pearl next to the clasp. I have yet to see that in a genuine pearl necklace. But also the appearance of the surface, the uniformity of the luster / shape / size/ color, the way it's strung, the...

You might also check out ROLAY (on Etsy) which is the same shop as pearl_society on eBay. He's in HK. I bought some GSS from him. And also druzydesign on eBay (druzydesign1 on etsy). That is Carolyn and Nick Ehret. (Edited for spelling)

    Pearl ID and restring questions

The pearls in question are not Tahitian keshi-- they are dyed freshwater pearls from China. They will lie better if knotted between each pearl. If you think you'd like to restring them yourself, you can save money-- many of us restring our pearls. It's not hard. Here is my tutorial...

    I think it's around 150-200 years old

Translation from Turkish: Hi guys, does anyone have any idea about these pearls? My mom is quite old and doesn't remember much. The single big one is about 16mm and surrounded by old cut diamonds, the bigger one of the pair is about 10mm, I think it was a birthstone for her first husband's...

How to finish this kind of necklace???

This is called a lariat loop or lariat clasp. It looks like the loop was crocheted. You can use the ring end of a toggle clasp for a loop instead.

    ID Help, if Possible!

It looks like a dyed freshwater second harvest (or "keshi" as some all them) pearl from China. I have a number of these pearls (although not dyed). These second harvest pearls occur when a freshwater mussel is placed back into the water after the first pearls were harvested. The pearl sac that...

    Did I find $25 Mikimotos?

The bath definitely improved them! I think the clasp is original. I have sometimes seen a metal mark along the thin edge of a clasp. Take a look there. It's also possible the tongue is a replacement, if the original broke with much use.

    Did I find $25 Mikimotos?

I'm excited for you! I think you will do just fine learning to knot. If for any reason you aren't satisfied with your initial efforts, cut them apart and try again. I think these old, much-worn necklaces are so romantic. Someone gave the necklace to a special woman they loved, and that woman...

    Did I find $25 Mikimotos?

The size range is characteristic of "3.5 momme" or just "momme" necklaces (momme being a unit of weight.) These were sold in Japan during WWII/Korean War era. They were popular purchases among people working in the Asian war theater; men would buy them and send them home to their sweethearts...

    Help identifying 25” necklace

    • Store the pearls separate from gemstones or metal that could scratch them-- a small pouch, or a separate section of your jewelry box, is ideal. • If you've been wearing them on an especially hot and sweaty day, wipe them with a soft damp cloth before putting them away. Same goes if you wore...

    I'm Drowning in Pearls!

I'm sorry for your loss! My mother also loved pearls and her very favorite strand was some nice imitations. That generation liked imitation strands and wore them often. I don't recognize the clasps. Perhaps someone else will. Is there a mark on them of any kind, whether brand name or type of...

    Should i get these tested?

They look like cultured akoya pearls that have yellowed a bit. About removing the nail polish-- I just asked my daughter if there was any kind of nail polish that would not come off with nail polish remover, and she said no-- any nail polish should come off, even gel type nail polish. She also...
