    Tiny Bead Nucleated Freshwater Pearls

They look lovely but how can anyone be in the business with such misleading and incorrect descriptions! This one is for the pearls in question: Description NOTE: these pearls are freshwater akoya pearl, have Nuclear. OMG! Sad...... Like no thought was given to the entry. "Nuclear"

Looking for South Sea button-shaped pearl for engagement ring - based in Australia!

Another option is to look at the offerings from https://www.paspaley.com/ Not sure they ever part with single loose pearls but a quick call would at least provide an answer. When talking about cultured pearls and Australia "Paspaley" always comes to mind. It is a brand though, so possibly...

    Shape query - SBQ?

Thank you BWeaves too. In fact, baroque is used, as I am sure everyone would agree, for those pearls that are too "out of a specific shape" to be called anything else. SBQ is used for those that are not as bad but can't really be classified as baroque and then we have, per GIA and some others...

    Shape query - SBQ?

Thanks for the replies pattye and Pearl Dreams. The question is probably a bit lost here as was hoping for more feedback. There are some that say "semi-baroque" should not be used as a shape description for pearls. Obviously GIA and Renee Newman do not agree. I see that Jeremy also uses the...

    ID help requested please!

Thanks Happy Huku! It has stuck in my mind through personal experience. Once had a necklace in my hands that were all bead cultured apart from around 6 pieces which turned out to be natural and they weren't all at the ends either! You learn from your experiences!

    Shape query - SBQ?

I have a query that may lead to many different opinions because it did in a recent conversation I had with a fellow pearl enthusiast. Do you think "semi-baroque" is a pearl shape? Would be interested in knowing what contributors here think based on their experience/thoughts. Not sure this is...

    ID help requested please!

Thank you for the new images massrog. I would agree with the ID being bead cultured on the smaller pearls per BWeaves feedback. The white matte areas in the centres look like the exposed shell bead nuclei. Just one observation based on previous experience "don't necessarily dismiss all as BC...

    ID help requested please!

You will probably need to share some close-up shots of the smaller pearls so we can see better if we have any chance to help with the ID from images which is risky at best. When it comes to the knots you can usually still see enough with the right technique. You just need to get your finger-nail...

    ID help requested please!

As a general rule you should be able to tell bead cultured pearls from natural or non-bead cultured pearls by what you see down the drill hole. Since the vast majority of bead nuclei are white FW shell what you should see is a boundary between the shell nucleus and pearl nacre overgrowth with a...

    Curious about my aunt's ring

Do you have any better images of the pearls? A side profile would be interesting too as it would show their shapes better. Are they round or button? Does look an interesting ring. Also like the nail-polish ;-)

The Most Incredible Akoya Pearls I Have Ever Seen

Very nice strand indeed what a lustre! Lisa's question is actually very good and it is probably worth knowing that maeshori type (lustre enhancement) treatments (many people call different variations of treatments "maeshori" these days) are prevelant on all types of pearls (FW & SW). I don't...

In tribute to professor Evelyne Lopez

RIP Evelyne. I am happy to see her work continue in the capable hands of one of her students, Marthe Rousseau, and hope that she is as successful as her mentor. Thank you for letting us know Cumingi.

    Another Necklace and Another Question

I don't know about the values but I would suggest you find another jeweller with a better knowledge of pearls. There is no such thing as "natural keshi pearls". They are either natural or keshi (latter are beadless cultured pearls formed accidentally during the culturing process by mollusks)...

My Scottish pearls drop earrings from the River Tay (and other info)

Thank you for posting all this interesting information about Tay pearls loopysheep. I have heard of Cairncross before. They are a well known Scottish firm who have handled many of the more important freshwater pearls found in Scotland I believe.

Are these authentic South Sea Pearls?

Earrings look nice, but unsure what you are asking kaetarroyo. Do you mean are they South Sea (Pinctada maxima) or are they natural pearls? Hard to be sure without seeing inside them (X-rays) for the latter, even though they appear to be more bead cultured externally, and they probably are...

    Help with Vintage Pearl Ring

Hard to say what they are with any degree of confidence from the images of the external features of the pearls. The fact that one has metal remnants in it COULD indicate it is old and may be natural and the worked or worn surface on the base of the other is not really indicative of anything. The...

    Cozumel Pearl Farm?

Thank you for the link to your report on your trip to the pearl farm sondich. Looks like a lovely place. Didn't really see much of a pearl farm operation in the images and some of the pearls look decidedly suspect (freshwater cultured) in one shot on TripAdvisor. Other images show different...
