What did the poor pearls do to deserve this?

Well...:) Painting or carving pearls are not forbidden, and next, it's the matter of everyone own tastes to appreciate or not, but maybe a thing able to make some objective difference is the part of true design, or only buziness goal (sure the most often) as reason to do that. Then, did you...

What did the poor pearls do to deserve this?

I agree you, la_corsetiere, these striped pearls are not at all unpleasant. Sure they are printed using an industrial inkjet process, but more successful than what we would expect.

    tahitian pearl treatment

To explain what you are talking of, Cees, Pearl Dreams and Marianne, this phenomenon of colour change looks like most happening when reducing environment, of any decaying organic matters, turns to oxydizing environment, when this matter is removed. Edit: after some research, maybe polarization...

    tahitian pearl treatment

In my own experience (I have worked a time with ichtyologists and marine biologists), the only way to fix a bit this problem of the decomposition of water organisms' matter, is a long bath in formalin, thus that's a way to avoid, definitively, because formalin is extremely hazardous. And even...

    What kind of pearl?

Thank you, Cees, for these clarifications. That reminds me I had heard Robert Wan was able to produce big pearls because he used old reef oysters.

    What kind of pearl?

Logical to think that only a big mollusc could produce such size of pearl. Tahitian farmers succeed now to make 17/18mm diameter ones, but I wonder how their oysters, smaller than south sea's, can bear these giant beads!

    What kind of pearl?

2thdktr, your advise is exactly the reason I think it's a second or third graft, allowing to produce giant pearls around big beads (nacre is thin, and bead gives a perfectly spherical pearl), grafted in the pearl bag first made by the oyster, but for the result of a lower nacre look.

    Is this a pearl?

PearlJ, you know 'pêche à pied':) It's a very pleasant practice! Well, we really have taken care of our environment for about forty years, but several damages made before are irreversible, and worse, species disappearance at this time leads many other disappearances today... Maybe it's too late...

    Is this a pearl?

PearlJ, you are right, that's a nice collector's item! A long time ago, we still had beautiful pearls, in France, but found in freshwater mussels. Unfortunatly, these shells needed pure water which has disappeared, and mussels with.

    Is this a pearl?

PearlJ, About the colour, no dreams to have... Most of the time these blisters are made of very thin nacre and full of mud. Anyway, french oysters' nacre is dull.

    Is this a pearl?

We have often blisters in our oysters, in France, even small pearls (very small...). This one is unusual because it's the flat part of the oyster shell which has produced it, more often it's in the hollow part we find that.

What kind of water do pearls contain?

Sorry, ennui, I have a doubt: in true, most oils have a complex chemical composition. Often they contain some essences, even a little bit, and other chemical not good for pearls. It's like water, often naturally acidic or artificially containing bleach, hazardous for pearls too, but not for...
