    7.8 kilograms Natural Pearl

That's a great idea, CrazyMissy !:D;) ... But at the present time, I am mounting my pearls, and I have not yet planned to make jewels for the elephants:p Talking about elephants, To carve giant clams'pearls would be like to carve ivory, in my view: working for a specy loss, a bad job.

    7.8 kilograms Natural Pearl

Maybe not carved, it would be also an old shell's piece rolled by sea, as a peeble?

    7.8 kilograms Natural Pearl

The carved shell must had been a giant one. Looking at the thickness of nacre, I can't imagine its size. even it was a part of its hinge. That's said to have seen several great, dead or alive, that diving in indien ocean, and these found in old churchs.

    7.8 kilograms Natural Pearl

Clam's pearl often take the inside shape of the shell. Only an expert would be able to make the difference with a carved shell. Anyway, giant natural clams are protected by international conventions, probably their pearls also. That's why, theorically, the only clams selled now are cultured shells.

    Faceted Pearls

These pearls seem truly well used alone on rings or mounted on pendants. I am not sure also that sharp edges of the cut would not be too much fragile to wear these pearls by strands, also bluring so unique light effects of these shapes.

    Faceted Pearls

Yes, Battah, pearls used for that must have thick nacre, more, they must be perfectly spherical or regular around an axis. Without that, facets can't be cut right. It's a real challenge to do that!

    work light recommendations plz

I use a LED magnifying glass: mine don't make a strong light, but maybe better for eyes health like that. The light is very white, don't allow to discern the true colour tones. LED don't heat at all.

    Faceted Pearls

I agree with you PPDC: wathever the material, is a question of pure creativity. The lapidary of Komatsu ( I don't remind his name), has worked ten years to create this cut, that in a right artistic way of thinking. And pearls used for that must be perfect, not at all poor quality.

    Faceted Pearls

Pareltje, it's a question of personal feeling. Pearls can be appreciated as they are in natural appearence, or worked, it's not one against the other. Please, look the diamonds: to cut one loose often the third of the rough stone weight, and a rough diamond is so a nice thing itself. Last...

    Faceted Pearls

These pearls are marvellous. The ones you show are worked by Komatsu, I think, with these square facets. Viktor Tuzlukov makes nice patterns also, but with triangular facets, I don't like them so much than Komatsu's. Other tahitian pearls can be found faceted, but hand-carved: that gives not so...

    Removing glue/epoxy

Well done, Sanippy... But it's a chance that epoxy glues, sold now to general public, are really bad quality epoxy resins (every fast hardening epoxy glues have very low technical qualities) . Without that, only to heat up 250°C, or use of very hard chemicals, can take off something glued with...
