    More dirty pearls....

I always thought akoyas were only produced as single pearls, does anyone know anything about the production of these twin pearls? Pattye, the clasp is an old European silver clasp that I had that seemed to be brash enough to give these little bubbles a run for their money..

    More dirty pearls....

The pearls are threaded on fine wire as the holes on many of the pearls are large. Also the holes have been drilled through the nacre between the twins and so having the strand fairly rigid stops too much rubbing on the edge of the nacre. The lady who originally sold them was quite elderly...

    More dirty pearls....

I bought these pearls from a lady in Hawaii about 15 years ago. She had got them from a yard sale where a Japanese lady was selling off her deceased parents belongings, and these pearls were in a box of mixed jewellery. When asked, the lady said her father had been in the Pearl trade, and she had...

    Second chance pearls

Now you’ve got me really confused! Are we talking about minuscule icons on your ipad( and I’m with you all the way about passwords!) or the hall marks on my necklace clasp? If it’s the latter, looking at it with a loupe until I went cross eyed,at the top is the so far untraceable makers mark,H&...

    Second chance pearls

It’s a new iPad as my last one got dementia and ran out of memory. It terrifies the wits out of me,sends me indecipherable messages( what is cut and paste?) and even had the audacity to tell me to refresh my widgets! I did t know I had any,let alone that they needed refreshing.Pearls are far more...

    Traditional gift?

The pearls are all about 5mm across and 3 mm long. They have some flashes of orient, mostly pinks and golds, but the photos I took look creamier than the pearls are in my hand. The cord that they are attached to is very fine wire, not thread as I was expecting.

    Second chance pearls

Pearlescence is right about the @ icon,I miss typed,it should have been”&” which the Romans first used.I’ve endeavoured to add a photo of the clasp. If it’s not worked, sorry for the indecipherable set of numbers....

    Second chance pearls

This Pearl strand was covered in gunk when I first saw it,the clasp was so dirty you couldn’t see the individual pearls in the settingThe silk was stretched and had frayed completely from the clasp. Now cleaned and restrung I love them to bits. The clasp is marked for 9 ct gold, dated for 1886,and...

    Traditional gift?

Thanks so much, both of you for a quick reply,I’m sad that the lady didn’t care or know about the significance of her pearls, but delighted that I can treasure them.I will endeavour to post photos once they arrive, though my skills are lamentable...even if they are not “ natural” every Pearl is a...

    Traditional gift?

I have just bought some pearls from an Indian lady who had them sent from India as a wedding gift.I haven’t received them yet,so no photos, but the strand is 10 1/2 inches long,on gold wire thread, and presented in a smart long velvet box.The pearls are small baroque shapes, but have a very...

    Old wives tale true?

I read recently that in Victorian times some ladies maids were in great demand to wear their mistresses pearls before “ the season” because their skin bought a glow to the natural pearls that had been stored in the winter.Has anyone else come across this custom?would some skin types actually”...

    Another Necklace and Another Question

Don’t know if this has any bearing, but a few years ago I bought an antique string of natural pearls, with lab report and xrays,in Milan, for half of what I could have paid in the U.K.Possibly Italian appraisers/ gemologists don’t attach the same value to natural pearls as other countries?

When were cultured pearls first available to buy?

Lately I have noticed “reputable” antique and vintage sites offering Victorian, and Edwardian cultured pearls, and sticking dates on like 1900s 1910.I can appreciate that possibly the clasp could be this date, but surely no cultured pearls were available then? Would all early cultured pearls,1920...
