Maybe this explains why in mixed colored strands of high luster freshwater pearls, the purple ones (my favorite) always appear slightly less lustrous than the other colors.

The top pearl in the third photo has a dimple consistent with Tahitian pearls.

I’ve seen this “barrel” shape on akoya pearls at the back of several well worn necklaces when re-knotting for clients. Some have been worn down to the bare nuclei.
