    Thank you both for your replies...pics are truly dreadful! I'll take some more. I had a thought that the mop 'ends' might have been added to to make the pearls rounder, or cut from the attached shell at the time that the pearls were harvested and then rounded up to achieve the more rounded...

    Hi Caitlin, thank you...that's all really helpful information. The pearls in this ring are quite an obvious (if pastel) colour and I've never seen pearls like this in an old ring. However, I do also have a brooch circa 1900, in what looks to be its original box which also has coloured pearls...
