Have I finally found my natural seed pearls ?

The last two pics show larger pearls too. #accidentalupload! Still haven't got the hang of this image upload widget.

Have I finally found my natural seed pearls ?

Antique natural pearls is my main area of interest, and after reading this thread I've been trying to analyse my approach to identification. Pre-PG, my approach (commonsense I thought) was that in the same way as house, furniture, art etc survives from previous eras, so does jewellery and...

Have I finally found my natural seed pearls ?

Gorgeous photos, Pattye and Caitlin!! Thank you for sharing these beauties. SUCH subtle differences between the shapes, it takes sooo much looking to actually see! Thank you Dave for clarifying what to look for, I've quite a number of older seed pearl strands....I know how to identify them...

Mikimoto clasp...guesses as to age anyone?

Hi BPD! Thank you for the comparison. Mine does have the 'S', mark for silver, as you say. Mine looks a more splodgy casting than yours, which is lovely and crisp. I think that's why I questioned them. Love your pearls, they do look delish...a nice size I should think?! They look to me a...

    Gorgeous golds....

I really appreciate the links, Pattye, lots of great pics and info there! I'm really happy with the identification, amti, pretty exciting, eh?! I work with antique jewellery, and so see a lot of older Pearls, but I'm only a beginner when compared to the wealth of experience amongst some of the...

    Gorgeous golds....

Thank you Dave, it is a bit of a mixed bag in terms of colour and lustre, isn't it?! That's what made me want to have a closer look. As a piece to wear it's maybe not as attractive as a more evenly matched necklace, but 'interesting' is what I like. I've read that historically pipi pearls...

    Gorgeous golds....

Oooh, surprise!! Thank you all for your comments. I hadn't thought of pipi's, but then I've never seen any. It looks as thought it is made from a 'collection' of Pearls. I'm guessing that if it is Pipi, it could make it quite a rare necklace? I need to learn more about them... Thank you for...

Mikimoto clasp...guesses as to age anyone?

Thank you Pattye, thats really helpful. I didn't think they could be too old, as graduated were more popular before the fifties. They're quite a 'useful' length, so I think they'll get a fair bit of wear!

    Gorgeous golds....

Hello Pearlfans, I've been meaning to post some photos of this sumptuous necklace for some time now, and as it's been a sunny day I think the pics I've taken show the colours fairly well. I've no knowledge as to their origin other than that it's old, maybe circa 1920's, the neck is 18", and...

    River or Sea?

Pattye, you were right...a mabe...what good eyes you have! I had it fixed up, and as I was cleaning the compound off, the Pearl broke off the mother of pearl back! Frightening moment, but it's all back together now...thank goodness for araldite!

Mikimoto clasp...guesses as to age anyone?

Hello there! Is it possible that anyone could help date a Miki clasp? Hopefully they are genuine? I bought these pretties recently and am curious as to their age. They're an unusual, but very nice 23 inches finished length, 5.5mm. I'd be muchly grateful for any comments...

    Victorian era South Seas pearl?

I'd agree, looks 1950's era to me. I'd say that from my experience, people who inherit jewellery from grandparents often think that that fact must mean an item is old, and don't realise that their grandparents may have bought it later on in their life.

    River or Sea?

Thank you for your replies...Pattye, no, there's no mop but it's kinda mabe shape isn't it? I'd assumed it had been cut off as its previous owner had got it stuck...it was completely full of grot, whoever had been wearing it wore it all the time I'd say! I'm hoping its saltwater...
