Portrait of Queen Margarita of Savoy and her pearls

Well her name is Margarita, right? Which also means pearls. So it’s apt that she is the Queen of Pearls! My italian friends didnot know that. They associate this name with the flower ‘Margarite’, a daisy like flowers.

Am at Gressoney-St - Jean, visting the Savoy castle and saw this portrait of the Queen. It might be of interest for some lovers of natural pearls, even though it’s a painting.

    Tissue nucleated cfwp

If thick nacre is such an important factor in the quality of the pearl, and tissue nucleated pearls has nearly all aspects of natural pearls ( those found in the wild ), why is the price so moderate?

    Tissue nucleated cfwp

Thank you PD and Jeremy. As I understand from your answer, it seems that the shape that I love, baroque bulbous drops, pear shapes found in SouthSea, would be bead nucleated. And the chinese Ripple pearls that look like Kasumi are bead nucleated also?

    Natural color Chocolate Tahitians

So, inyour opinion Pattye, these are saltwater, irradiation dyed. I’ve pretty much come to the same conclusion based on what PD posted. Haven’t heard anymore from my Japanese friend. Busy in HK. So my friend was sold a dud.! Told her last night that that was the possibilityand she seemed...

    Natural color Chocolate Tahitians

Katbran, the largest pearl is around 14 mm, while the 2 cracked pearls are aroumd 9 mm. There are all sorts of blues and greens, and cocoa, and bronze, coppery, etc. under the predominant brown. But such lack of luster! And those other colors don’t really pop out and you, you kinda have to look...

    Natural color Chocolate Tahitians

Thank you PD, Pattye- My Japanese dealer wrote back last night and said, ‘if they are real Tahitian, and bought at that time period, chances are high that they are natural color’. BUT, she needs to see the pearl IRL to see if they are Tahitians. She will pass it along to her Japanese colleagues...

    Natural color Chocolate Tahitians

Pattye, when she pulled them out to show me, that was my first thought also; dyed freshwater pearls. But upon closeer inspection i do see nuances of tahitian color under the different shades of the brown. One pearl has some blue orient in it... I’m suggesting to her to take it to GIA here in...

    Natural color Chocolate Tahitians

Can these really be natural color? My friend bought these two strands from a jeweler shop here in Bkk for $$$ in the early 80s. She was told they are natural color and that it was rare. The pearls in real life doesn’t have much luster, and looks very dull. I know the professional retailers are...

    Bangkok Gem Fair

There was a man there at the Fair associated with Harry Winston and Beauty Gems. He told me that in his opinion he has seen some of the best Burmese golds as beautiful as any Jewelmer gold pearls, grade per grade. He said that the Burmese needs the art of ‘Marketing’. He has worked with Assael...

    Bangkok Gem Fair

Perlas, what did you think of the Burmese golden from Ranong pearls? And the ones from Rio? I found the prices really decent; will the HK fair be the same, or Hk just have more endless pearl vendors with more selections? Cathy Keshi, thanks so much for uprighting my pics!
