    Help please!! First pearl purchase!

I'm just not sure exactly what it is you're after. We've explained that pearl grading is mainly assessed via size, shape, luster, surface and color. Color is the single subjective factor. What I see would be different from what you see, assuming we have the same computer monitor settings. Darker...

    Help please!! First pearl purchase!

Did you mean iridescence? I mean, if you don't know what you're looking for, you're not missing it to be honest.

    Help please!! First pearl purchase!

Looks pretty good to me! If you can see your reflection sharply (I can see the camera lens quite clearly) then that's a good sign of luster, from a layperson's point of view. Color is subjective but that looks like a nice deep green. Surface and shape look great from this shot. Question is, do...

    Broken Post

Did the resulting solution or residue seem discolored? Not sure what metal the reamer was made of, but iron would give either green or brown salts depending on the acid, so I'm guessing it dissolved a bit of the pearl rather than the metal. I should think calcium carbonate would be more reactive...

You're right about that. I'm having palpitations just reading about it! Good luck!

    The Aussie view

Exactly. I like my cheap freshwater thrills but I will save up for Tahitians and SS, maybe even Sea of Cortez if I ever get there. I understand the point made in the article and agree with it, but some of the things stated as "facts" just don't sit well with me.

    The Aussie view

OK, being dumb here. I thought they were talking about Akoyas. Why would someone compare freshwaters with Australian SS? It's like apples and oranges. Totally different market. I am a freshwater fan, but I also like SS when I can afford them. And I thought poor quality freshwaters are just less...

Lavender Freshadamas - Which strand would you choose and why?

Looking at your skintone I'm guessing the third strand from the top will look very good. It's kinda bronzy golden. The first strand would be too cool for you, the second strand will be in between as it's bronzy but has more blue overtones (dusky, should I say), while pink probably wouldn't go...

Lavender Freshadamas - Which strand would you choose and why?

I'd pick either the first or the last. The second seems to have better orient but I like either blue or pink. Depends on personal preference and skintone though. I'd go with pink for my skintone (and obsession). BTW, what size are they?

Freshadama peach / pink 11-12mm pearl

They might have the odd large one not enough to put on the site. But downsizing has been rampant with the supply, so there would be really few. I'd call them and ask.

    Report from Hong Kong

Well, how many days would you actually need to see most of the decent pearls (and catch-up with PGers, of course). I usually spend only 2-3 nights in HK as hotels are expensive, but I need to see friends as well. Helps to plan early.

You're capped!!! That's why I opted for a plan where I pay $3/GB once I go over. But I've got 48GB offpeak. Yay!

    Report from Hong Kong

One problem is I'm not in the industry. How do I actually get in? I'm there for fun more than anything.

    Report from Hong Kong

Are the dates for March out yet? I'm travelling from March-May next year, so might be able to fit that in if it doesn't clash with sakura season in Japan. Shanghai/Suzhou will have to wait til April. Pearls take priority. It's the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2009 Mar 4-8 isn't it?

Red dyed CFWPearls are becoming more popular every year

I'm not sure why I'm currently so obsessed. I have never been a fan of dyed pearls, especially the low grade ones. But perhaps the purist in me is dying out as the Aussie dollar drops ... dyed freshwaters can be a funky cheap thrill until I have enough fire power to burn a huge hole in my...

Not big ones, especially for the cranberry/lavenders. They're very quickly sold out as well due to limited quantities.
