Low grade Akoya can look like this- kind of chalky, but it's not what you should be looking for if you're spending good money and want Akoya. There's no way to be sure, but my first thought was imitation or shell pearl. Would agree with finding a vendor you can trust if you have to buy...

Out running some errands. Today finds Mom wearing some simple but very high quality Akoya studs, around 8.5mm-ish My mom likes the classic, slight pink-ish hue. I show her some of the great stylings on this thread and she always chuckles in admiration because she keeps things so simple! Great...

No doubt you're paying something for the name, but keep in mind that not all WSS pearls will be created equally. PP and Paspaley have vastly different target markets, so it would not surprise me if you're wanting to get the EXACT same quality from PP, it may be more expensive to get nicer pearls...

I would say if you haven't taken the PearlsAsOne course yet it would be very helpful as an overview on GSS before you go - even if you only look at the GSS section. There's a free code you can get from PP, if I remember correctly. My only advice on gold south sea is that they are expensive...
