Fake, Imitation, Laguna, Faux, Majorica, Majorcan, Swarovski Pearl Photos, Stories

Yep, you have to do the test quickly and after the pearls to be tested have sat alone in the ambient temperature for at least a few minutes away from showcase lights too. Same with gemstones. This little "old wives tale" trick has gotten me many a real stone and pearl in my life at a bargain...

    My First Bead Show Purchases

Group two, first a group photo of the very small pearls I bought.Tthen close ups of some saltwater baroque the vendor said were only A grade, everyone else that saw them after I bought them thought they were higher grade; large very white Akoya grade B, definitely low on nacre and almost a...

    My First Bead Show Purchases

First bead show for me today, and I was literally blinded by the light. So many beads and people and armed with so little knowledge, but I went , I saw, and hopefully I conquered. So here are my photos in sections. First the "cool" stuff: A long large natural color mostly white freshwater...

And here are the bead show fakes: According to the vendor, mop bead covered with ground up pearl and shell, will not scratch, etc. Got to admit I thought they were real when I first saw them. Had to have some for a costume necklace, they are 4mm I think. Daddys Little Pearl

    Do Good Pearls Scratch?

Thanks Pattye, if it had not been for the scratches they would have been a great buy. My guess is that they WERE AA originally and they got damaged travelling around improperly packed, etc. They were so scratched I could see the scars without a loupe. ( I carry a 10x with me at all times)...

What are these and what are they worth?

I love them! I think the older rice krispies have a great look, the just shout nacre, look wonderful when you are dressed up but also very "cool" when decked out in jeans and a t shirt. You were lucky to get these! Daddys Little Pearl

Fake, Imitation, Laguna, Faux, Majorica, Majorcan, Swarovski Pearl Photos, Stories

Oh not just big ones, a huge table of all sizes down to less than 4mm, the size I bought to play around with. I was astounded at how good the ivory and white colored ones looked. Every color of the rainbow, nice peach and pinks, browns, but also some garish hot pink and a vew colors that...

    Do Good Pearls Scratch?

Went to my first large bead show today, and one dealer, highly recommended by local customers, had some strands of AA grade very large, maybe 11mm, white pearls and even to my untrained eye no doubt they were at least AA , beautiful pearls, very lustrous, great reflectivity, very round, but...

Fake, Imitation, Laguna, Faux, Majorica, Majorcan, Swarovski Pearl Photos, Stories

But are the Majorica AS COLD as your real pearls? Glass will still be colder than plastic or other synthetic materials, but should not be as cold as any gemstones or real pearls. And on this subject, I just went to my first bead show, at least first time for a big one. Scary place. One...

    Arts Crafts Pearl Ring

Thanks to all, this is quite helpful. As to size, definitely never made for a man, it is a small size, 5 or under, and does not appear to have been resized. The Denmark was only a guess, I acquired this with a bar pin, again a good Arts & Crafts design although not exactly matching to this...

Fake, Imitation, Laguna, Faux, Majorica, Majorcan, Swarovski Pearl Photos, Stories

Pattye, thanks for posting that article, i was amazed about that necklace they described that had three strands Majorica and one strand cultured and that it fooled experts! I know for a fact Majorica when rubbed together or on a tooth show no gritty feel at all and also are not ever cold to the...

Artisan Necklace But Is This Really Pearl?

Well Pattye, there is my necklace! Which brings up a dumb question, obviously I know how a pearl is born or created depending on natural or cultured, and in an oyster, but shells also contain and I assume produce Nacre as they grow, so why is their material not considered pearl? Oh so much to...

Fake, Imitation, Laguna, Faux, Majorica, Majorcan, Swarovski Pearl Photos, Stories

Caitlin, it is actually really scary and certainly explains why so many people get fooled. After I posted these I was amazed how real some of these look on our forum. When I first found this forum a week or so ago, I was so curious how one could verify a pearl by photos, and now you know why...

    Are Real Pearls Always Cold

I guess I should have defined "cold". In a warm room the glass ones might still feel a little cool to our cheeks with our body temperature a factor, but my real pearls will still feel much colder in comparison. At least the older ones. Some of the newer freshwater that I know are real, they...

Artisan Necklace But Is This Really Pearl?

Very raised, nearly an inch, and all chambers are open, here are more photos. At first I thought the artisan had "created" the centerpiece by gluing or fusing small shell pieces together, but I can't see any glue and it looks like an entire item. Hard to tell if the top part is applied, as...

Artisan Necklace But Is This Really Pearl?

Just bought this at the antique mall where I sell, the dealer bought it in Europe, he is guessing 1920's, heavy unmarked silver over what I think is pearl material, I can't get a tooth to it nor a fingernail, and don't want to risk scratching it. Although it looks uniform on both sides it is...

    Arts Crafts Pearl Ring

Hard to date it, A&C movement started in Europe in the 1860's until maybe 1910 or so, later in America. If this ring is European it may be older than I think, if American it could be as late as the 1940's. Pearl is in fabulous condition, ring has slight wear, it is very thick heavy sterling...

    Are Real Pearls Always Cold

Sounds like a really dumb question, I have always used the "press them to my cheek" as my first round of testing for real vs fake, but lately I am finding some pearls I know are real, but they just aren't that "cold". Is the coldness dependent on type, quality? Nacre thickness? Possibly age...

    Arts Crafts Pearl Ring

Help needed on this ring, bought in the 80's from an antique jewelry dealer, definitive Arts & Crafts period piece in heavy sterling silver, one of a kind, came with a pin that was similar with smaller pearl but a different silver design that was signed for Denmark. Would love to know the type...
