Would it be possible to grow pearls in saltwater mussels?

Thanks Dave - I am learning a lot. Have pearls been cultured in Californian mussels or are they limited to natural pearls? Is there any difference in pearl growth between male and female marine mussels? Most of the photos I have seen so far look to have been of female mussels with pearls...

Would it be possible to grow pearls in saltwater mussels?

Thanks Dave - that is really interesting. I have seen pictures of pearls from Mytilus edulis, which might be similar to what might potentially be obtained from Perna canaliculus? I haven't found any references to pearls occurring naturally in our Perna canaliculus though.

Would it be possible to grow pearls in saltwater mussels?

No, I don't have the experience to do this - I am just curious. If it was possible, I'd love to see someone try it... What sort of unique problems do they have? They seem to have plenty of mantle tissue, but I'm not sure I could identify the gonad if trying to nucleate. I've never heard of...

Would it be possible to grow pearls in saltwater mussels?

We have a large green-lipped mussel industry in New Zealand. These mussels have iridescent inner shells, but I have never heard of them producing pearls and nor have I been able to find any research on this subject. I am wondering whether it might be possible to grow pearls in these bivalves...

How do you store your pearls?

Maybe some of our larger pearl sellers could come up with collapsible/recyclable boxes for delivering pearls, with inserts that could transfer into a drawer tray or wall mount? (Buy the tray or mount separately). Each insert would need the ability to securely hold 2 or 3 similar sized pieces...

How do you store your pearls?

Just googled "container store"... found lots to like. Impressed to see they will ship to New Zealand and even allow payment in NZ dollars. The stackable trays look the deal, but I may also need one of those travel wraps :

How do you store your pearls?

After a few years of pearl collecting, my jewellery drawer(s) are now an overflowing mess of hard-to-distinguish boxes that I find myself rummaging through each morning. I know I need to do something to establish order, but I'm not sure what? I'm interested to hear (or see) how others store...

Hi JerseyPearl -good thought. It fits the middle finger of my left hand, so that may be the better place for it... plus a matching manicure and some handcream will be needed, while I'm drawing attention to my fingers!

Wow, hanadama, those look great too! My other purchase from the sales arrived today - an Edison pearl ring (button, peach pink). It is pretty much as I'd expected - definitely one "statement" ring. Though I think if I saw it on anyone else, I would have assumed it was a fake due to size...

Thank you all for the comments. I am thrilled to have got the necklace - will now need to keep an eye out for some matching earrings! Waiting for the Edison pearl ring to make it's way over - will put a pic up of that one too when it arrives.

So my tahitians turned up yesterday and I love them. Yes, they do have more blemishes than I would think is suggested by the description "light", but the lustre and subtle colours are gorgeous.

I got an oval, silver-peacock AA+ 8-10mm from PP - and no, I didn't snaffle the picture, so I'll have to have a go at photographing when it turns up.

I got one of the Edison pearl rings too (in the yellow gold). I just received the shipping notice and it has a wee way to come to get to NZ. Expecting the imminent arrival of a tahitian pearl necklace - never thought I would be able to afford one, so I am rapt!

Today's Mail - the Vietnamese Akoya

And that comment is also very true! Fortunately, I have a lot of blue in my (southern hemisphere) winter wardrobe. I am certain they are going to match everything :)

Today's Mail - the Vietnamese Akoya

You are so right! I have three daughters, aged 13 to 17... the oldest has already become a minor pearl addict, and requested a pearl necklace for her upcoming 18th birthday (thanks Pearl Paradise!), and the previous year it was pearl earrings for her school ball (thanks pearl lunar!). The...

Today's Mail - the Vietnamese Akoya

I feel incredibly lucky to have picked up a pair of earrings in the Pearl Paradise sale of vietnamese akoya this month. They arrived in the mail today and could not have been more perfect. The colours were very true to the sale pics with plenty of turquoise-green and crimson hues. My photos...

    Paua Pearl Ring

Seventeen years ago, I lost a diamond from my (fairly ordinary) engagement ring. Since then, it had been tucked away in the jewellery box, waiting for some attention. With my 25th wedding anniversary this month, I decided to ask a local goldsmith, Nicola Ann Harwood, to re-model with a small...

Pearl Farm in the Sea of Cortez

I've loved that pearl since I first saw it on Douglas' blog. Probably the only pearl I know by name! It is so nice to know where it has ended up and a deservingly intricate design. :)
