Pearl necklace found fishing.....are they real?

Since this is a pearl forum, I'm thinking we should probably get back to concentrating on what kind of pearls the OP found, rather than how they came to be where found. Still, it might allay some concerns to know that Wikipedia says of Sacandaga Reservoir: Today, the local businesses benefit not...

Pearl necklace found fishing.....are they real?

I don't know about everyone else, but I looked at this necklace and figured it had been in the lake for quite a while--months or years. But it's intact; whatever the stringing material is, it's still holding together. Wouldn't it have deteriorated after prolonged exposure to water? Here's my...

Pearl necklace found fishing.....are they real?

Is that a magnetic clasp? It would be unusual to see that kind of clasp on good quality, genuine pearls, especially if it's base metal. You could try cleaning the clasp to see if you can raise precious metal, or quality marks, moosedlsl, but I'm thinking the water has pretty much destroyed what...

    Help with pearl identification/value

Ok, copying and pasting is one of my strong points, so I'll start the new thread. Posts don't scroll off this kind of board, so your long form shouldn't disappear, Lisa. Sounds like you'll be able to put it to good use. Please forgive us for hijacking your thread, amandu. I vote for akoya, too.

    Help with pearl identification/value

Lucky for us, the admins do the work of approving the post and making it a sticky for us. :) You've done a thorough and comprehensive job, Lisa. Nice work and much appreciated! I'm wondering if it would be wise to start with just the basics and then ask for more details only if needed. Asking...

    Old Pearl Fashion

Pieces made of natural and cultured pearls are mentioned here sometimes and I thought folks might be interested in seeing this example on Ruby Lane: SLS! SAVE $1200! VERY RARE Antique NATURAL & Cultured South Sea Pearl & Diamond Double-Strand Necklace - GIA Report The dates and sizes aren't...

Grandma's pearls, my 44th birthday present yesterday from my Mummy.

It wouldn't be difficult to find a similar necklace if something happened to yours. Here are a couple from Ruby Lane, one for $60 and another that's $465. I suspect an insurance appraisal would be higher, maybe in the $600 neighborhood. The important value of your necklace is in its meaning...

Distinguish between salt and freshwater pearls with mg strips and hydrocloric acids?

There's a mention of this technique in the GemologyOnline.com Forum. Maybe there will be additional information soon.

What kind of pearls are these and the history.

Here you go, Helen: link to closed auction. There's not much info except basics like dimensions and composition, though. Still, it's always a joy to look at nice pearls. :)

Can this vintage tahitian ring be saved?

If large scale farming and marketing of Tahitian pearls started after 1975. and the pearl is original to the ring, then it's less than 40 years old. I actually thought it was somewhat older, based on the design and goldwork. Pattye is spot on, the shank is for arthritic fingers. You don't see...

Have owned these pre-owned pearls for 15 years... now have questions

Just a little difference in communication, I think. "Modern" to me means "not antique" and I think of antique as being 100 plus or so years. If you're going to get the pearls restrung, maybe you could get the metal in the clasp tested at the same time. A quality mark isn't required, so the...

Have owned these pre-owned pearls for 15 years... now have questions

I don't have anything definitive for you, CowPrincess, just some thoughts. I've read that the traditional way of stringing pearls in Japan included knotting only between the last three or four pearls. Mikimoto pearls were strung this way, until someone pointed out that knotting between each...

What kind of pearls are these and the history.

I was thinking freshwater, too. Mostly because your pearls reminded me of a piece I saw (and loved) on eBay. The closed auction will be available for a bit longer.

    Great grandma's pearls

Here are some older baroque akoyas for comparison. Lulu, check your pearls to see if any of them have a little extra deposit of nacre near a drill hole, like in the above image. Baroque akoyas often have that. Kind of reminds me of that last little drip on soft ice cream.
