Is this black sphere a pearl?

It looks like pearl to me, not sure if it's Tahitian... does it have overtone?

South Sea pearls - opinions on quality please?

Hi Valerene, that seems to be a nice lot you got there! :) May I ask why you import pearls from Indonesia while you are in a land of pearls of yourself? Here in Indonesia, many big farmers focus on exporting only, and sell the rejects to local market. So, finding high quality pearl for good...

    Nervous Engagement Ring Shopper

If you're set with that setting from shecy, then maybe try to ask the sales staff if it's possible to buy only the mounting? And later you can buy the loose pearl on reliable vendor, such as PP etc.

Where to buy south sea pearls on Bali

I always enjoy checking Atlas galleries whenever I visit Bali. Price is a bit high but their pearls are truly gorgeous :) There are many pearl vendors in Lombok as well. Just need to be careful and know exactly what you're looking for. They like to say cheap freshwater pearls as "Lombok pearls"...

Good pearls for under 300 please help?

The first link shows pearl necklace in AA+ and AAA grade. While second one is Freshadama (better than AAA). You can read here to understand about their grading http://www.pearlparadise.com/Freshwater-pearl-grading.htm If you're not sure which to choose between AAA and Freshadama, you may...

    South sea earrings help

Thank you kelluvpearls. The pearls are untreated (not coated & not dyed). I do sometimes get treated pearls, but I disclose that when I'm selling them. Btw, have you decided what to do for the pearl earrings?

    Pacific Pearls International-Australia

Late to this conversation, but that "AAA" from PPI is bad.... I've checked PPI on ebay before, and their prices are quite high, so I'm surprised their quality is actually sub-par. Moreover, the last pic shows they're kinda creamy so they look FWP-ish to me. I uploaded pic on my album on FWP vs...

    South sea earrings help

Luster-wise, they look AAA to me. But I still can't see the scratch. Where did you purchase the pearls from? Return is a hassle for overseas purchase but try to talk to the vendor first, maybe they will offer some solutions.

    Pondslimes-what are they?

As mentioned, it's (usually golden) discoloration on pearls. Here's the sample from Kojima http://shop.kojimapearl.com/products/2-strand-lot-of-pondslime-star-pearls

    South sea earrings help

I consider the surface "texture" to be normal, as long as it's not too wide. The scratch though, I can't see it on the picture.... But if it's bothering you, try to contact the vendor for replacement. Luster-wise, they seem to be high from the last picture. But the black background doesn't...

    PP June Special

I checked that one on PP but didn't remember the details. Did they mention about the grade of the pearls on the website? I personally think the SSP look A+/AA grade (the close up one with obvious blemishes). Care Ehret ones are nicer, they're smooth with high luster, definitely higher grade.

Pls help reassure someone that this is tahitian

My vote is also on real Tahitian pearls. The pearl on the right doesn't seem to be perfect round to me, it's slightly drop shape. I also have pearls that don't pass tooth test, at least not obviously gritty like most pearls. But I know for sure they're real.

    Interesting new strand from Mikimoto.

They said "This limited-edition necklace features A+ quality 9x8mm Black South Sea and Akoya cultured pearls with an 18k white gold and diamond signature clasp. It retails for $26,320." That's heavy price tag for A+ quality.... but Mikimoto's A+ is probably AA or even AAA somewhere else. I...
