    Fixing a loose nucleus.

I've looked at quality issues of this nature for many years and find that this approach (trashing something faulty) is far more a matter of choice and a concern for image (hard to tell about this) than a virtue. If one discloses the fault(s) and then sells an item at a price reflecting it's...

    Grading System for Abalone Pearls

Thanks Rob, I'll check it out. Marc http://www.flyrodjewelry.com/home.html

    Fixing a loose nucleus.

Well, yes, Jeremy. That is an important point. My thinking was that in the case where we used it, since we were already introducing a glue into the pearl to secure it to the post it would be a moot point. The use of glue to afix a pearl to jewelry seems to be simply assumed as obvious, if...

    Fixing a loose nucleus.

The post by Sleight under Tahitian Pearls--Stinky Pearl Dilemma-- reminded me of something I found a solution to when I was assembling the crab bolo with the tahitian pearl tips. I was half-drilling one of the tahitians when--wouldn't you know it--the drill hit a loose nucleus (fortunately...

Another Take on an Abalone Man's Pendant

Here's one that I finished this morning. It's strictly a J. Marcus production. I couldn't figure out just what to make from it for a while but the pendant Jeremy made from the Natural Abalone pearl set it's course. It's such a unique mabe'. I've never obtained another that would finish out very...

My father went to China and brought me pearls

Sheryl--Drilled pearls are, in the right designs, the easiest pearls to set while still exposing the greatest surface area to view. If a mounting is made so that there is a back that hides the side you don't like and also keeps the pearl from turning around, and if it is made with elements of...

    Grading System for Abalone Pearls

I have very slowly been attempting to put together a grading system that would allow for at least some objectivity in the evaluation of naturally formed Abalone pearls, specifically mabe's. (I've been using a simple formula to calculate the height to width dome ratio, for instance.) If anyone...

    Crabby Delight

Aw-w-w Shucks--What a complimentary bunch to be found here!:D Thanks for all the kind words! (Do you think I should tell Bill and Alan? It might give them swelled heads. . .:p of course--I'm immune to such tawdry reactions. . . ) Marc http://www.flyrodjewelry.com/home.html

    Natural Abalone Pearls

Caitlin: Absolutely, that is true. See my post above on the double attached solids. They are almost dead center on top of an old blister that was eaten away on the outside until the toredo clam fell out and was being covered from the inside when it was harvested. I see this phonemenon all the...

    Crabby Delight

Bill Lynch of Fairhaven Gold in Bellingham just loves crabbing! The crabbing he does on Puget Sound involves the Dungeness variety. (...to differentiate it from the crabbing he does in the shop. . .) After thinking about it for a lo-o-o-ng time, he finally commissioned a spectacular wax carving...

    Fox Business News Tomorrow

That was a very good interview, Jeremy! I though that it was a good job and long enough for people to notice. Couldn't miss that abalone pearl! Thanks, Steve, for the link. 4:30 on the west coast? Isn't that about 7:30 on the east coast? The Rand McNally demographic atlas tells us the eastern...

    Natural Abalone Pearls

Ah! Caught it just in time! Just as it was about to slip away to page 2! There was a ridge, about 62mm long, in one of my shells. It looks as though the abalone squeezed together part of the inside of the shell and it formed a protruding fold. (Pix 1, 2 % 3) I thought that it might be somehow...

    Maybe the oyster likes it

By Laurenb: "I also strongly doubt mollusks have memory, and I contend memory is a semantic and physiological requirement for suffering because one must compare a present state to a past one to suffer." Excellent point! There must be a context for comparison and without memory, where is the...

How old is this pearl ? Play again !

From Cliclasp: I wish I could have the windows opened for me, but it was not possible, so sometimes the quality is not there I understand--and would not want to do anything to discourage you from what you are doing on this thread. It's quite fun!:D Marc

    Maybe the oyster likes it

Barbie, You make some interesting statements and ask some intriguing questions here. I hesitate to try to carry this further because we are beginning to go into levels of speculation here that we have no objective ways of knowing about. So--I will answer one question with another question. by...

How old is this pearl ? Play again !

I'm sorry to say that the quality of these pictures and the one of the dog collar above are such that, at least on my monitor, I just can't see enough detail to tell very much about them. They are too blurry and the contrast seems to be too high. Marc
