Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco

Murrle Bennett and Company was a wholesale jeweler established in London in 1884 by the partnership of Ernst M?rrle of Pforzheim, Germany and John Bennett of London, England. The firm achieved significant successes after 1900, producing pieces in the German Art Nouveau style known as...

Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco

Hi Pattye and katbadness, great information in your posts above, thanks so much. I'd love to see a pic of the "necklace from Theodor Fahrner, around 1930 with Japanese cultured pearls" if you're able to get a pic or scan. Regarding Mikimoto's trip to Germany, I'd think it likely he would try...

Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco

Our main area of collecting is Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Our 'Keepers' are usually signed or 'book pieces' that we hope will hold or grow in value. Jewelry is a relatively recent interest in the last couple of years, and I regularly kick myself for not paying more attention to it...

    Michelle Ong Masterpiece on Carnetjewellery.com

This Michelle Ong masterpiece came up in one of my searches recently. I think it falls into the category of "If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it." WOW! (Click the image to enlarge, and click again to zoom, or visit http://www.carnetjewellery.com)

    Paspaley trims its sails...

This journalistic style is very common amongst the Aussis, they love poking fun and exposing feet of clay. However this is entertaining journalism backed up by factual insights. What on earth is the immigrant Paspaley family doing setting up and running an immigration detention center? In the...

    pearls - enquireies

Hi there, I recognise the earrings, they are a very well known Mikimoto design depicting the Southern Cross star constellation. The Southern Cross appears on the Australian and New Zealand flags, and this design was very popular in both countries. They came in a variety of sizes and...

Very elegant items, and Mikimoto pieces really work together as a suite. A great strategy sales-wise, once you have one, you need another!

So that one is just $72,000. Wonder how much "Price available upon request" equates to for this one, also off the Mikimoto website? http://www.mikimotoamerica.com/categories/necklaces/opal-baroque-couture-necklace.html Described as: Opal Baroque Couture Necklace Magnificent, one-of-a-kind...

Lucky girl, and congratulations on graduating, they are tomorrows heirlooms. Interesting how modern Mikimotos are noticeably whiter than vintage ones.

Thanks GemGeek. Recently bought a secondhand Panasonic Lumix FZ35 and a Lightbox with a couple of 5400K (natural light) lamps. It has transformed my photos and means I can take them anytime instead of waiting for a sunny day. When I first tried to post to this Forum it's picture handling threw...

This is our other set of Mikimoto "keepers". (We try and keep the best and sell the rest). This choker length 41cm (16in) Mikimoto necklace has 58 x Akoya cultured pearls of 6.4mm to 6.0mm, of very high quality. I cannot find a single blemish, and they look like they've never been worn. I'll...

Could this be a Pipi Pearl from Tongareva?

From my research Penrhyn and Tongareva are just different names for the same atoll. Penrhyn was the early European name, from one of the first ships to land there, while Tongareva is the local Maori name, and it's now the correct name, it means "Floating Tonga".

Could this be a Pipi Pearl from Tongareva?

Hi Caitin, here's hoping, it goes to the Gem Lab for X-rays on Monday, hopefully I'll know the result within a week. The Lab owner is familiar with what he called "Penrhyn Pearls" so that gives me some confidence in their ability to test it. I must say this Forum is the only reason I'd even...

I'm sure Mikimoto fanciers and traders would find it useful to see a selection of Mikimoto pieces. I've often wanted to access a database of Mikimoto necklace clasps with dating references so I can make a judgement on the age and genuineness of pieces I come across. I'll start the ball rolling...

Vintage Mikimoto Plating Material on Silver?

Mikimoto as a Fine Jeweler Mikimoto as a Fine Jeweler While I've been asking the question about the composition of Mikimoto silver clasps, brooches etc., I'd like to add that I have a great respect for Mikimoto as a fine jewelry house. I seriously doubt they would have made clasps marked "S"...
