    Why?

Walking around Green Lake in Seattle this morning on a sunny day, this very thought occurred to me. As a perverted deviation of this thread, might we consider Earth as an evolutionary biological organism that has developed this color scheme to serve as a beacon of sorts for interstellar...

    Why?

Surmising here, the scientific stuff is great and explains the 'how', but the title of this thread remains unaddressed. Wendy?

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

I was searching for old content (having been away so long) and came across Wendy's thread in question, which should be interesting reading for many of the more recent members. 2011! We were really into it!

    “Power and Grace”

Ditto to above, and these images lit a bulb for me as offering inspiration for unique pearls otherwise gathering dust, such as abalone. Do you consider custom work, assuming artistic license (with a little input)?

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

That's so fascinating about the mystery of nacre color, especially as the evolution of shell exterior color/pattern is so intuitively understood. In my post I neglected the forum-level 'What Kind of Pearls do I Have'—essentially my 'Ask the Experts' suggestion—and would have edited or deleted...

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

Public comment for admin: Thread creation is epidemic, way too easy and the constant deluge of new threads with casual inquiries is especially irritating. Would that more threads would act as catch-all, such as 'Show Us Your Pearls'! What if admin could restrict new thread creation by...

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

Would it make any sense to open a Marine Sciences thread? There is certainly enough expertise here to moderate such a discussion.

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

Very nice. Yes, the color range stands clarified. At the time of my initial activity over 15 years ago I was not offered the darker shades, for whatever reason. It was only when Poe Pipi from French Polynesia began showing up on this thread that the parameters were broadened.

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

…and suddenly we are presented with this Poe Pipi ring! Including two quite darkish-colored pearls, with lovely lustre. The source is impeccable. Ben Bergman was raised on Tongareva/Penryhn as his family resided there from the 1960s to 1990s specifically to harvest and ship Poe Pipi. Upon seeing...

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

Thg larger of the two lots from Alex Collins will remain ‘in-house’. Current thinking is that we’ll get them out at Pearls by the Bay, try to determine a setting or two that would complement our other pipi pieces. I’m also curious to see the off-color pearls up close, from the photo they don’t...

    Pearls by the Bay 2024

Count us in. My wife, beneficiary of off-the-wall pearl activity of mine over the years, also looks forward to meeting everyone! This will be my first annual attendance since the early days of ‘Pearl Ruckus’ at Pearl Paradise, fully 15 years ago or more. I recall an extraordinary sharing of...

You can see how those would be miniature precursors to Persian Gulf / Radiata.

Book Review - “Pearls: A Practical Guide” (2021) by Wendy Graham

Belatedly, my copy arrived today after having missed its release initially. It is clear and to the point, 'just the facts' plus a few very sound conclusions (such as progenitor status for Pinctada Maculata). The iinformation accessibility is stimulating and will serve as a welcome refresher...

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

Wendy, my extended absence here left me uninformed about the release of your book. It's on order! If Pearls by the Bay in May offers the opportunity for a little unabashed trophy sharing we would certainly want to bring Te Poe for a reawakening in the California sunshine.

That provides additional incentive, insomuch as what 10 years of absolute darkness has done to those pearls. ALL: Note I will attempt editing my above posts which incorrectly equated the island of Aitutaki with Penryhn. The correct Polynesian name for the island, as in many posts earlier in the...

    Pinctada Maculata (Pipi) Pearls

Contact remains very warm! Our old friend in Rarotonga grew up in the pearl business on Tongareva and still refers to that island by its Western name. Penrhyn is cited in all the classic pearl literature as the most famous source for Pipi pearls. To the point: Already at the time of our...

Jeremy, Douglas, Pattye, Wendy, et al: Nice to be seen! Keep up the great work here! Will be watching out for the next Pearl Jam, Ruckus, or whatever they are called these days. I'll also see if I can get any local updates on Pipi harvesting on Tongareva, contacts are cold but not frozen.
